since when has siakam demanded a trade ?
You got to consider the cap. We got RJ at 25 a year, Barnes will be 40, IQ will be around 25 and Jakob at 20. Those four add up to 110. If you max out Pascal at close to 50 million a year. You have already exceeded the 142 cap. We are at 160. This is before considering Denis, Dick, Boucher Them 3 already take us to 190 million and we would be in luxury tax zone. Add in some scrap players and we at 200 million and a being close to 20 million over the tax threshold. No way ownership pays that money. Now if Pascal is willing to resign at 30-35 a year for 5 years sure. But don't see that happening.
Unless you think that is a contender, I don't see any reason why the Raps would put themselves in that position.
So how is a trade not somewhat inevitable.
People say just resign Pascal and trade him later. The funny thing is no one wants a max contract for a non max player and will be 34-35 at the tail end of the contract. Also teams trading for Pascal are looking to add a 3rd star. Not sure thats the kind of money you want to dish out.
So most likely what happens is you trade Pascal for a few smaller pieces and where one or two are under rookie scale control or bird rights. If we ship out 40-50 million in a trade, I bet you we are going to get 10-15 million back in the form of expiring contracts as well.
Let's not even consider who the actual players are but more so the math. Take GS for a second:
Paul 30 million expiring, Kuminga 6 million, Moody 4 million. Paul you either buy out or flip to a contender for expiring contract and picks. Something like Paul for Lowry and 2 2nds.
Indy also works as they have some expiring's with Buddy or Brown who has a team option.
You now go into the off-season
IQ - 25 million
RJ - 25 million
Barnes - 40 million
Kuminga -15 million (You will probably try to extend at a cheaper price) Could get to 20 million though. Just benchmark OG's last extension with us.
Moody - 5 million
Jakob - 20 million
Boucher 10 million
Dick - 5 million
Jontay - 2 million (Try to lock him up to a cheap multi-year)
JFL - 2 million
Dennis - 13 million
McDaniels - 5 million
Koloko - 2 million
This line-up you are at 179million. You are going to be 2-3 million below the tax threshold. Maybe you add a guy at the MLE depending on where the tax level gets set. Now you bank on these guys basically all improving the following year and maybe you consolidate some pieces in 2025 and try to get another star.
With the math above Trent is a goner as well for sure. People give Masai **** for not extending. Last thing you want is a bunch of overloaded contracts not worth what they are and we end up giving up picks for people to eat the contracts. This is Toronto and not LA or Miami where you can pay someone a first to eat a bad contract and a tier 1 FA signs with you. Instead we pay a first round to get someone to eat a contract and we end up with guys like Hedo Turkoglu
