This is actually quite simple. Siakam wants a max 5 year deal. He is turning 30 on April 2nd. Whatever team hold his bird rights can offer him that deal and retain him. Short of that deal, he'll just test FA and get the max 4 year deal a team like the Sixers could offer.

So if Sacramento is saying he wouldn't sign, it is probably because he refused to sign until the summer when he can be maxed, and they probably don't have an interest in maxing him out at 5 years, and were trying to get him to sign an extension, which after the trade he could only sign for 2 years.

The reason Fred left was Houston offered him the max (for 2 years, 3rd yr is a team option that won't be picked up). Toronto wasn't willing to max Fred (which was a smart move).

Pascal wanting to stay with the Raps for the rest of this season, gives him ultimate flexibility. If by chance he becomes eligible for the supermax (making All-NBA), he could try and force their hands to sign him to that (similar to Beal). But, even if he is not eligible for the supermax, he would still be eligible for the regular max (5 year deal) from the team holding his bird rights, and in the summer he could try and force the Raps into a S&T with the team willing to pay that, and the city he would want to play.

How much is the regular max? Numbers please.

5yrs 240 or 4yrs 202

Neither number will be that high, really the FA players for Pascal with playoff intentions are the raps and indy, and Indy can't get up to 40+ per yr

50mil AAV is nuts, I can't lie.
I LOVE Siakam but I can't stomach the thought of us maxing him out. I don't think Masai can either which is why he's trying his best to trade him.

He could've/would've been traded already if that was the only purpose. We have been in extension talks as well as reported.
Really it's 2yrs in the 40s and two yrs in the 50s, but again I don't think it gets that high if we bring him back.

This is Masai’s fault for not moving him earlier but they can’t even get a list of teams that he would re-sign with?

Is it really Sixers or bust?

I hate all the narrative shaping that happens during these situations. It has always happened, but is exacerbated by everyone claiming to have an inside track on what's REALLY happening.

What happened to the extremely basic principle of citing your sources? You literally can't make it through any form of education without doing it.

I think Masai was willing to do De’Andre Hunter, AJ Griffin, Sacramento 1st and ONE MORE PIECE for Siakam.

If the Hawks trade DJM, depending on what they get back might determine the trade. One more piece.

Fanspo said it was January 6 he could be traded but Hawks fans say extension announced on July 9 and signed on the 10th making him trade eligible January 10th.

2 days to go?????

The team reported to not be willing to give Siakam the max (the kings) are surprised that Siakam wouldn't re-sign with them.

The Kings wanted to trade junk for him and then sign him to an OG level contract. They've clearly not thought this through enough.

Here is the thing.....what do we NEED?

PG....got that with upside
SG.....got that with upside
SF.....got that with upside
PF....got that at All Star level if we want it
C.....got that

Bench PG....got that....could use young guy to replace Schro in another year
Bench SG....got that....but not next year.....unless Gradey has a massive turn
Bench F....got that....but not next year
Bench C....is Porter the answer this year? Koloko/ Porter next year

Seems like we could use an impact backup C.....oh, and a Superstar.

To get the C and continue be a better team and much better to watch, we don't need to trade Siakam. In say 2 years to try and get that superstar, having Siakam to move could be huge. He could be our DD. We don't have to trade him where the best piece is bench players or a pick.

They need back up big, preferably one who is mobile and can space.
More shooting.
Big 3&D.

Problem with keeping Siakam is to address these needs you’re likely a tax team next year and then you’re way into the tax in 1.5 seasons with little depth.

Good summary.

I wonder if there is a scenario (i.e., the right team with the right trade assets) where Pascal would sign an extension with an option. That would give the acquiring team some relief knowing they had him for 2 playoff runs.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Pascal would get his max salary next year and could opt out and get a 20% raise in the first year of a subsequent deal as a non-Bird free agent. Doing it this way would be a lot more money compared to a straight 4 year deal (around $25-30M by my calculations). The risk of course is injury, in which case he’d “only” get the ~$90M from the original extension.

The kings would obviously have offered him a max contract, they are just butt hurt that Siakam doesn’t prefer them and that is why they are saying they wouldn’t give the max. Its just the ugly guy syndrome where he gets rejected by the hot girl but turns around to save face and says she wasn’t worth it anyways.

Pascal probably wants Philly or Clippers who can create max cap space. If Pascal wants the 5th year hell just force Masai to do a sign and trade for the poo poo platter thats being offered now in the summer. Pascal is playing this perfectly, its Masai who truly F’d up!

Oh understand, keeping Siakam is not a long term play....it can't be like you said.

Maybe spending 20 million on 4 non rotation guys this year was a bad thing.

Where's this talk of Pascal wanting to go to Philly coming from? Seems his goal is to stay in Toronto while getting the maximum $ he believes he deserves + term he wants.

Or...securing the max possible contract...THEN demanding a trade with a list of teams he'd go to and handcuffing the team's ability to extract max value.

Haliburton just got carried off the court after a suspected knee injury. I'd say the Pacers are no longer in the hunt. Edit: after seeing the replay, looks like a groin strain. Not as bad but it still might change their mentality depending on the severity.
