Fanbases in general overvalue picks in trades
Especially without knowing the year or protections? This is premature, frankly.
Go ask the Celtics what they did with the truck load of frp they have gotten from the Nets in that Pierce/Garnett trade. Or OKC what they did with that PG13 Picks... the more picks, the higher the chances to get real prospects.
The Celtics had a lot of luck in how things played out. Their co-owner said of the trade:
We were going into a hole. We had lesser players and no coach and a multi-year rebuild. There was no celebration. We were sending two of our future Hall of Famers away. There was nothing good about this deal other than that we were doing the best we could.
Boston thought it wasn’t going to be until the 2018 pick where they
might start to benefit from the trade. Ainge himself said that he didn’t expect the 2016 pick to be very high since the Nets projected to be a very good team. They also didn’t expect much from the 2017 swap because they expected the Nets would be better than them; the swap was also basically a throw in to close the deal. The Nets were terrible in the years following the trade and we know what that meant for Boston. The trade wasn’t a stroke of genius or anything and the Celtics would admit as much.
As for OKC, they are .500 on those PG13 picks. They drafted Tre Mann in 2021 and he has shown very little. The 2022 pick was successfully used in selecting Jalen Williams. It remains to be seen how those picks play out. They may not even use them since SGA blowing up and Chet looking amazing means they need players who can help now and not prospects.
