Minor LA-UTah deal

Post#1 » by DanishLakerFan » Fri Feb 2, 2024 7:50 am

Utah get: Jalen Hood-Schifino and Gabe Vincent
Utah give: Olynyk and Dunn

Why? Utah might not make the play-in and could could decide to make a few moves that could help down the road. With Lauri, Collins and Kessler i bet Olynyk might be leaving in free agency, which goes for Dunn as well. They take a flyer on a recent first rounder in JHS, who was ranked high both on ESPN and the Ringer, as well as a solid combo guard in Gabe Vincent, who has been out with an injury for most of the season, after playing a major role in Miami's recent playoff-run.

Lakers get: Olynyk and DUnn
Lakers give: JHS and Gabe

Why? They double down on the current squad and make a move around the edges. Get a versatile big who can shoot which fits well both next to and behind AD. And they get an athletic hustle-guy that can play with both Reaves and D'Lo in the back-court.

Any little deal between Jazz and Lakers would likely involve Lakers removing the top 4 protection on the pick they gave the Jazz in 2027.

Vincent and SRPs with that top 4 removal for Olynyk is the sort of deal I'd expect

Good point. That top 4 removal is pretty important, though, so i'd be reluctant to give that up.

Yeah, the original deal doesn’t really have any incentive for the Jazz, but the revised here might have legs. I don’t know if Ainge would want Vincent’s additional two years, but I didn’t love that contract when the Lakers offered it.

The incentive for the Jazz would be getting a recent high pick as well as a rotation player in Gabe instead of losing Dunn and Olynyk for nothing. Gabe played the 3rd most mpg in the Heat's reacent finals run, so he can be a legit playoff-contributer, which has trade value. Of course i dont really know how that injury is going to impact him, so the deal of course assumes a full recovery from him.

Removing protection might be tough. Lebron might be retired and AD might roll his ancle, so it could be really valuable with the top 4 protection.

But it would depend on what the Jazz are trying to accomplish. If they're going for the play-in, the deal makes no sense as you'd be taking away guys that actually play.

You perceive that to be incentive, I just don’t. IMO, JHS was the 2nd worst first round pick made in the last draft (after Jett Howard). Second round talent picked way too early. And, like I said, I wasn’t a fan of the Vincent contract when the Lakers offered it last summer.

I don’t think the play-in will be a huge factor in Ainge’s decision making either way. I expect that the Jazz will look to re-sign Dunn. Olynyk could get moved, but your original offer would have a slim chance. Sorry.

This is a definite yes for me. I'm a big believer in JHS becoming a solid pg.

LA would be crazy to remove top 4 protections for this package. Sure it might end up being nothing, most scenarios it ends up being nothing. But when it is something, that really hurts giving up that pick for these guys for a rental in a year your team isn't a contended.

OP seems fine if Utah is willing to sell. Not sure Utah is. Fighting for the playin might be more valuable to them.

I agree that removing the protections would be crazy for the Lakers in this scenario, but we’ve definitely seen crazy on this scale before; desperation feeds craziness. I wouldn’t do it as Lakers GM, as this move doesn’t ensure a playoff berth let alone championship viability, but the OP is a nonstarter as well.

JHS was second round talent? Most had his projection 13 to 21

I like JHS enough, but we have George and I don't think they'd be an ideal pairing. If we just want to take two shots on young guards and see who shakes out, I think the value is probably more than what we are owed, but I'd prefer different incentive (maybe moving protection to the pick to top 1 protected?).

I know that my opinion isn’t with the majority, but I’m yet to be convinced that it’s wrong. (Though I concede it could be eventually.)
