If the NBA truly values its franchises - they should have a stipulation that any head coach candidate should to have at least 1 year of Lead / Head coaching experience.
Experience isn't everything
Both Steve Kerr (4 championships and 6 finals in 10 seasons) and Doc Rivers (top-10 in wins all time) were hired with zero assistant or head coaching experience at either level.
On the flipside, people were furious with the Knicks for not hiring Ewing after he was an NBA assistant for ~15 years...
So, he went to his "other" team-- Georgetown-- where the Hoyas had won 118 games in the previous 6 season under JT Jr.
Ewing drove them right into the toilet, going 75-109 in the next seasons including 2-37(!) in the Big East over his last 2 years.
He presided over Georgetown's only season with zero conference wins (0-19) in 52 years of conference play.
