JJ Redick To Target Sam Cassell, James Borrego, Jared Dudley As Assistants If Named Lakers Coach

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon May 27, 2024 3:50 am

JJ Redick would target Sam Cassell, James Borrego, and Jared Dudley as his assistants should he be named the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Borrego is currently with the Pelicans, with Cassell with the Celtics. Dudley is an assistant with the Mavs.

Cassell is also reportedly being targeted as an assistant for Doc Rivers' staff with the Bucks.

The Lakers are said to be "infatuated" with the idea of hiring Redick

If Reddick is smart he passes on the LeBron retirement tour(s) in the LA fishbowl, that's not a job you take if you have no coaching experience and need time to develop and hopefully have a long career. He'll have a painfully short leash there and be constantly under scrutiny on a team that has lots of pressure and slim title hopes.

His long-term coaching prospects will be much brighter with a younger, up-and-coming team in a different market.

He’s trying to break into coaching as a 40 year old. He has to take what he gets. He’s fortunate to get his first job coaching a major market team like the Lakers and the greatest player of all time with an unlimited budget. He can always go to a rebuilding small market paying minimum coaching wage if he gets fired.

Unlimited budget? Thats comical. Have you not been paying attention to the lakers for the past 8 years. Tell that to Caruso who they didn’t offer a contract, tell that to Schroder who said an offer was never on the table, tell that to Derozen who they didn’t want to pay for an extra year so they pivoted to Westbrook which allowed them to dump long term salary for his soon to expire contract, tell that to Ty Lue who they didn’t want to pay like a championship coach, tell that Malik Monk, etc. The Jeanie’s pockets aren’t deep, she’s on a budget.

1. if the lakers arent going to be a contender, eff it, do something cool.
2. This is the most coveted lead assistant job in the NBA since jj probably getting fired after 1 season

Hiring JJ Reddick would send the wrong message to all the Assistant Coaches / Lead head coaches who have tirelessly put in the work and years of dedication to the craft.

If the NBA truly values its franchises - they should have a stipulation that any head coach candidate should to have at least 1 year of Lead / Head coaching experience.

Experience isn't everything

Both Steve Kerr (4 championships and 6 finals in 10 seasons) and Doc Rivers (top-10 in wins all time) were hired with zero assistant or head coaching experience at either level.

On the flipside, people were furious with the Knicks for not hiring Ewing after he was an NBA assistant for ~15 years...

So, he went to his "other" team-- Georgetown-- where the Hoyas had won 118 games in the previous 6 season under JT Jr.
Ewing drove them right into the toilet, going 75-109 in the next seasons including 2-37(!) in the Big East over his last 2 years.
He presided over Georgetown's only season with zero conference wins (0-19) in 52 years of conference play.

Valid points - yes experience is not everything - but putting in the effort / time should give you an opportunity @ the head coaching position.

Also agree that the concept of coaching is vastly different today then yesteryears -- the leagues are heavily driven by analytics, marketing, box office revenue. At the end of the day you just need a motivational speaker with fundamental understanding of the game.

JJ Reddick could very well become the next Steve Kerr but the uniqueness of Kerr was that while he did not have coaching experience, he was coached by the very best ( Pop, Phil ) / won multiple championships / part of the front office @ Phoenix / Broadcaster -- Kerr had such a vast well balanced & deep understanding of winning and assembling teams. JJ Reddick has about a fraction of that exposure.

Let's hope that at the end of the day if JJ Reddick gets the nod it gives an additional route for others to pursue the coaching realm.

Worked out well for Ham.

Almost all coaches struggle in the beginning of their careers. They need their GMs and Presidents to be patient. Reddick is Bron's pal so that's helpful but as soon as they go through a bad stretch Jeannie and Pelinka (neither are cut from that Jerry Buss cloth) will be more concerned about how the Lakers are being reported and less abouit the course the team is taking for the long run will unjustly throw a new coach under the bus. Like they did this year.

If I were Reddick I would consider another franchise. One that isn't under the microscope after each regular season game. One with more realistic expectactions.

Obviously more prominent now but has been the case for some time.

More assistants do heavy lifting (Tex Winter) while the HC manages egos (Riley midseason vacations + Phil Jackson handing out books)

In mid 00s Boston it was Thibs coaching ICE and Doc doing pressers
