Thanks for sharing--I like the process it went thru. Def starts off with some lofty comparisons. I think comparing Carter to most any star PG is a bit of a stretch, especially the top guys where it's a comparison of 19 year old freshman stats vs a 22 year old player who had a big jump in year 3.
I'm totally IN on Miami drafting Devin Carter. I think he's an excellent prospect who can be a real defensive difference maker at the next level (not just a good defender).
But, I think any comparison or expectation to a lead NBA guard is lofty and somewhat hard to justify. I'm rooting for him to achieve it though. You just look at his playstyle and playmaking stats and it's clear his Assist rate and A/TO rate is lower than most all PG and lead guard comparisons (and that's comparing his 21-22 age stats to a lot of freshmen).
My expectation for Devin Carter at the next level is to operate as a secondary ballhandler that mostly scores through line drives to the rim and catch and shoot 3s, with a spattering of on-ball work in between.
I'm very encouraged by his jump in 3 ball this season, but for the guard position, it's hard to trust his shooting profile to fully translate yet. There's not much in-between game and he doesn't have a lot of creativity or lateral movement when slashing--it's linear.
He does A LOT of things that are not part of the typical guard profile exceptionally well, and some of those things don't even show up on a stat sheet.
My comparison for him is Josh Hart (defense, rebounding, uncertain 3 ball translation). I do like the Alex Caruso comparison, as I think he can fill a similar role in the NBA and there's a chance his defense can approach that level of impact (which would be elite).
His floor is excellent. His ceiling is TBD for me.
Even without being a pure lead guard he fits the mold to a tee what Spo and the organization goes for. Spo always talks about not always needing a lead guard but more connectors. He would be similar to what Gabe Vincent brought in the combo guard role. With Jovic in the starting lineup i’d continue to have him handle the ball and create more often than not.
He's a nice piece for any team to add. That's why I love his floor. This team (short term and long term) definitely desperately needs a real infusion of offensive creation. But, I don't think we can count on any prospect to provide that. There's a handful that I believe have a higher likelihood of getting there (Collier, Topic, Carrington). But none of them touch Carter's floor and defensive profile.
All the talk about back court and front court prospects (and the lack of plus wings in this draft), watch Miami draft a wing that no one predicted lol
Jaylon Tyson is my oh chit phucker came out of nowhere Heat pick lol.
