I do agree there was no guarantee that the transition would work. Billy Donovan for example was as a super hyped college coach that probably took longer to jump and really hasn’t found that edge he always had in Florida. Could be the roster management he’s had so maybe that will change in the future if he can ever get a team with some star players.
As poor as DET has been the contract which is now leading to other coaches getting more money than he did at $13M/season. I did not think he was worth that amount. JJ has zero experience coaching at any level so let’s see how that one works out. Vogel never should have been fired imo because if AD never gets hurt who knows what happens. Then they trade for Russ and the rest is history. LeBron is so dumb for ever thinking he could make Russ work. Now he’s content never winning a title again in his sunset in LA.
I agree for the most part. Any new job has it's learning curve. We can look at Nash, Kidd or Billups as recent examples of how those first few years usually look for a player-turned-coach. I'm not sure why JJ would do better. We can also look at the history of college coaches moving to the NBA and that learning curve is just as steep. I don't believe either of these two choices should be getting huge deals. First time coach gets first time coach money. It's simple.
Monty has proven that he is a great developmental coach. He also coached one of those teams from the lottery to the NBA Finals. That alone was enough to make him one of the most sought after coaches in the NBA. Monty was scheduled to get paid $7m per for the next three years, so he could have waited for a great job to come along. DET wanted him bad enough that they made a ridiculous offer... but probably not too ridiculous because they weren't getting a better coach to sign on.
My entire point is that people need to stop comparing every new deal to Monty's deal. There were extenuating circumstances. The situations are not remotely comparable.
Hurley in LAL- First time NBA coach/Playoff team/Vacation destination city
Monty in DET - Proven NBA coach/garbage roster/forfeited $21m to take the job
I understand. Its basically like Rudy Goebert's contract on the player end. As great as he is in the voters eyes for DPOY he has proven time and time again he just cannot stay on the court in the postseason. He is overpaid to some degree. Everyone was trying to use the MIN trade for Rudy as comps for value two summers ago which caused a major freeze in offseason landscape. Obviously coaches/player contracts & value are different cup of tea
Yes, that is a great comp! A defense-only center (even the best one) isn't worth a max deal in today's NBA. Add to that the cost it took MIN to get him. But when you look at the players MIN had been pairing with KAT, and that Edwards was on the rise, and the fact that MIN has never been able to land a big fish in free agency... MIN came to the conclusion that it was worth taking a swing at Gobert. That situation was an outlier, not the new norm.
Beal would be an example in the other extreme. A good player that is clearly not worth a max, holding a no-trade and stuck on the books of a tanking team. WAS was forced to to either keep him or trade him to his preferred destination for whatever they could get. This situation was also an outlier, not the new norm.
Monty is now the 5th highest paid coach behind Pop, Kerr, Spoelstra and Lue. That is a list of some of the most successful current NBA coaches. Pop is already in the HOF! Their contracts should have no bearing on the new contracts of a 1st time NBA coach with zero NBA experience.
I heard Chauncy Billups is making $2m per. (It's undisclosed.) That would be a better comp. He was a better player than JJ and his time in POR has been a tire fire!
