The author is interpreting the results incorrectly and your generalization is just wrong.

Majority of his trade ups that have worked have been for 1-2 spots and in the early lottery. HE throws in 3 trade ups that worked outside this range but this is just noise. As he showcased, trading up/down later in the draft actually shows little/no correlation; picking an arbitrary 20th pick line to say trading down from there is better is simply noise.

The data simply shows that trade ups in the lottery have been successful but that the team trading up is usually going up 1-2 spots and needs a lottery pick of their own to give up. Any larger gap or any later in the draft, it's a complete crapshoot and random.

And to your characterization of what the Raptors have done: the Raptors have not had a lottery pick in the recent past outside Scottie and Gradey. They tried to trade up during the Gradey draft for Cason and had a deal in place w/ Orlando but were beaten to it one spot above the Orlando pick by OKC who had an earlier pick to give up (number 12) to the Mavs. They also tried to trade up for SGA but did not have a lottery pick to give up which the study shows to be necessary when trading up in the lottery in the draft.

It's just an article for reference, I didn't sign off on anything. And my "generalization" re:pricing is accurate, there are several transaction types available, of which, they do not participate in, while other teams often do. Your own picks, whether lottery or not, is only one piece.

But you were referencing the article to support the case for movement the transactions around draft day.

Which doesnt really seem to have any data to support and seems to only satisfy the desire to just see things happen

Not sure if anybody else follows HoopsIntellect during draft season, his scouting videos are very high quality and I really like his insight into contextual development and how he projects kids. He was on Sam Vecenie's pod a few days ago.

Anyways, he's another guy that sees a massive and flat tier of players in the 1st round. Here's his latest big board for the entire class:

His tier that includes #19:

13. Cody Williams
14. Ware
15. McCain
16. Carrington
17. Tyson (was really hoping for him at 31 but he's gained a ton of momentum)
18. Holmes II
19. Da Silva
20. Salaun (I grab him immediately if available)
21. Edey
22. Filipowski
23. Missi
24. Walter
25. Smith
26. Dadiet

Similar to Jalen Johnson, unfortunately he is never going to beat the low motor allegations until he actually disproves it in the NBA.

I had Jalen Johnson 4th on my board in 2021, and was told I was wrong about him as well. Ware doesn’t have a low motor. People like to run with false narratives these days and it’s frustrating,

I think there are some good role to borderline starter Cs at 19 but not 31. I think we can get backup PG at 31 if we choose wisely. These are 2 biggest needs follows by bigger wing that can play SF/PF.

19 Ware, Missi, Holmes 31 Trey Alexander, AJ Johnson or Ajay Mitchell. All three need to add strength and weight. AJ has higher ceiling but other have higher floors and might stick on roster.

And trying to figure what the usually clandestine Raps FO is thinking is extra impossible. You can guess based on workouts and past history but Masai will surprise you.

The answer to this poll may as well be, who am I drafting? But that's not the question being posed here.

Bolded seems like a reference to what I posted on the first page. The thing is, I pretty much nailed the Gradey pick last year. Admittedly I didn't know about that Torvik site before last year's draft, so I'm only 1/1.

Gradey was showing up all year as a "Masai-type." In one of my posts pre-draft I said something along the lines of, if one of Taylor Hendricks or Gradey Dick drops to the Raptors pick Masai will pounce. Gradey dropped, and Masai pounced.

Nah, sorry that wasn't in reference to your post at all. Just common sense about how ppl will try and predict things. I'd say it's instructional but my broader point is that Masai is unpredictable. We know he was targeting Cason Wallace but made the right call to just pick consensus BPA in Gradey.

But there was also way more certainty in the draft last year. What consensus exists this year? Especially once you get into the 20s? You're talking about a range of like 10 players as seen in the poll.

I went with missi based off who i think we draft. No problem with that selection.

Who i think id prefer off that list is probably edey if he drops, which might be unlikely

Yea I don't think Edey drops. I think he's too unique, can almost justify his entire value with his unicorn measurements as a strict drop coverage guy but he a) also hits FTs at a high rate (can't hack-a-shaq) and b) has actually shown some upside in his shooting.

Been watching a lot of Missi / Ware / Holmes the past couple of days and I think I actually like Holmes a bit more than the other two. Despite being a bit smaller than the other guys, his skill and feel pop more and he'd fit well as a versatile 4 who could play the 5 in small lineups. Ware has the motor concerns but he also sets weak screens and just looks too disengaged for his talent level. Missi is just more limited in what he can do (can't pass, poor FT shooter, very limited away from the basket) but is just a monster defensively.

I wouldn't be mad with any of those picks. I do think the big options are better than the guard options at 19.

I think Edey's the pick if he's there, otherwise probably Missi. But if Ware passes the Raps vibe check, he's a toosly player with size the Raps typically like.

But I didn't expect Dick last year so who knows.

I think they will take him at 31.
