Right, but Parl was referring to former Celtics players pooling their funds to become a buying group.

My Bad, missed out on Parl's part.

You know what former player might be able to gather such a group together and has already saved the Celtics once: Larry Bird!
If Michael and LeBore can have their own teams, why not Bird?
It would be quite amazing...

He's gotta spend that Allstate "mayhem" money on something I guess :dontknow:

I long ago came to terms that Larry is an Indiana man again. It’s fun to speculate about former player owners, but it’s more likely to be a billionaire or three that we are not familiar with.

Or Mike Gorman (just kidding it’ll be the Vista Print guy wicked good slice)

You can skip this post, Hal :)

Talk, that the Celtics were looking to build a stadium near Encore Boston - definitely improves the long term viability and
value of the franchise...

Maybe the last straw for Wyc was being called “Wyc Grossman” on the ESPN broadcast

I don’t know why everyone is panicking, plenty of teams write in these contracts things the new owners can/can’t do. Wyc loves the Celtics, they aren’t turning it over to just anyone.

Didn’t Cuban add something to keep himself in charge for a few years? Haven’t deals fallen through when the seller thought the buyers were going to go in a direction they didn’t want (AROD nem).

The new owners that blow teams up are usually doing it to teams that have been run piss poorly. Why would a new owner blow up a winning team, how does that grow the investment? Doesn’t make sense. You’re not making money off your investment if your team isn’t winning.

Win 24, 25, 26, 27, 28. Then they can sell it all for scraps. We're already 20% of the way there.

Tatum could end up as a star without a supporting cast or could be shipped off to wherever. He has to protect himself. This supermax doesn't even start until 2025-26. A player option for the fifth year isn't nearly enough protection.

That's part of why the timing is so weird.

Yeah it is weird timing. I would have to assume JT must be done…and include all possible player friendly clauses.

2025-26 Celtics payroll

Jayson Tatum: $54.1 million (projected)

Jaylen Brown: $53.6 million

Jrue Holiday: $32.4 million

Kristaps Porzingis: $30.7 million

Derrick White: $28.1 million

Payton Pritchard: $7.2 million

Baylor Scheierman: $2.5 million

Total: $208.6 million to seven players

Key free agents: Al Horford, Sam Hauser

Projected repeater tax bill for full roster in 2025-26: $250 million

Total roster cost for 2025-26: $470-500 million

For reference, the Celtics biggest luxury tax payment in team history was $69 million during the 2022-23 season. The biggest luxury tax payment in NBA history was by the Warriors last season for $176 million. Boston’s projected number would top that number by $75 million without even accounting for salaries for Al Horford or Sam Hauser. It takes a billionaire with money to burn to be willing to foot that bill.

And a stadium with their own concessions and parking revenues; also Taylor Swift concerts in the venue.
Let's get Taylor Swift to buy the team...
