I feel the opposite. I feel like there aren't a lot of great options at the minimum right now. I'd rather they go for the big wing at the deadline using KJ's salary and draft capital.
For now, I hope they sign the best guys they can at the minimum, regardless of position.
I'm with you for sure: go for the big forward at the deadline.
I won't be upset if we bring back Marcus Morris, only b/c he's a crafty vet, brings experience, can nettle other teams' bigs, etc.
That said, I bristled every time he was on the court last season. With the exception of a very few "hot hand" games-- most of which the Sixers lost, or won in blowouts, so that Morris's contributions didn't really matter-- he justified my dislike. He hasn't helped good teams win close games.
Cedi Osman is vaguely OK, but mostly has had a negative impact.
JT Thor has had terrible regular AND advanced stats during his relatively few minutes. He might be a decent development project, but he seems very unlikely to make a positive impact soon on a contending team.
I might be interested in Gallinari for the vet minimum, if he's adjusted to his post-torn-ACL body, or to Gordon Hayward if he's willing to take the minimum. Would probably be most OK with RoCo if the team doctors feel that he can play any kind of minutes, because he's now a crafty vet as well as a tough SOB who-- if he's healthy enough to play-- can at least defend the 4 and hit open 3s.
But what I'm getting at, and what's implicit in your post, is that the big forwards available now are almost certain NOT to move the needle.
We'll get who we get to finish out the roster, but getting someone who's gonna positively impact a title push is going to require a deadline trade or possibly a post-deadline buyout guy.
