Facts. Even if the NBA sent their guys to the 3x3 comp, they'd have to choose wisely. Of course, LBJ, KD, AD, and Ant would destroy the comp, but if they send random dudes, they have to know what they're doing.
The 5x5 team members would be off limits for load reasons. But there is no logical reason why Brunson, Brown, etc. couldn't play in the 3x3 league. A let down for not making the A-squad? Sure. But you're still representing your country and competing for a medal in basketball. Instead, we just get "what the hell am I watching?" TV material.
That’s a good point. Go get a gold and play more of a pickup type of game. I think it gains popularity with the pros. 2028 in LA seems like a great opportunity. Would be even better if they picked 3 guys that already play together. Since you mentioned Brunson: Brunson, Hart,
Anunoby, Randle
Anunoby is British, but, of course, the US could naturalize him like they did Embiid, if they really don't have any other competent players.
As for the "What the hell am I watching" TV, well, that's just the opinion of those who don't follow the game. Those who follow 3x3 are extremely happy for those players who have been working for years now to promote the game. They are essentially pros. Though they don't have fixed salaries, they earn all of their cash via prize money from the various tournaments they play in. Furthermore, they don't really have an off season. They just practice on week days and then participate in tournaments every other weekend for cash, similar to poker players.
Thus, it's awesome that they're getting rewarded for their year long commitment. That said, FIBA and bigger companies will see the financial potential when bringing in 5x5 pros. From merchandising to commercials, overall media coverage etc. It has to happen at some point imo.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.
