I don't know about the future prospects of Dick as a starting SF, but I do think he's the best option on the team right now. Especially in terms of size and spacing for the other starters. Better than 6'4 202lbs Bruce Brown or Ochai who can't play basketball
I'd argue that having him as the 6th man might provide best balance to roster, as bench scoring is very thin, and Brown offers a glue piece and a guy that's solid defensively starting. I mean, depends on if we want to win, but a motivated contract year Bruce might get us something in return at deadline as well. I look at it with an open mind where either could be the option, but it should be earned in camp. Never been a fan of handing young guys a starting role before they've earned it.
The thing with Gradey is that he works much better when offense is created for him. He struggled in summer league when he was forced to create, and he's likelier to have to do that off the bench. I'd bet he looks best when he gets minutes with the starters, allowing him to move around the court to get open, cut when he's able to etc.
To some degree, true, but they run little actions for him and he'll get more of those off the bench. Curling around screens and handoffs and things like that were being run for him wherever he was in lineup last year. In starting lineup those were mostly being run for RJ and rightfully so. Also, on SL team he didnt' have guys like Scottie, RJ or Quick. Let's say you leave in Quick and RJ to finish out first Q and have Scottie start 2nd Q with bench unit, he still won't necessarily have a much different role in the offence. You could argue in the starting lineup he will get less touches. Time will tell, I'm just openminded to multiple scenarios, we don't know how Grady, Bruce or Ochai are going to look with the full roster once the season starts, although Ochai I'll be surprised if he's any good lol. If starting lineup with Grady gives up 35 points every first quarter, then I'm guessing Darko is going to do something about it, and most logical piece he can move is the one spot we're not certain of in starting line up.
