If he works on his body, balance, core, etc. then he his length, smooth shot, and vision may become a useful asset. Yeah he's an older rookie, but the late growth spurt does set his clock back some. I will say I am more curious and intrigued than my initial impressions of him based on highlights and edited game footage.

I totally agree with that last part.

But why this frequent reference to George’s age? When did being 20 yrs old somehow make you a risky draft pick?

Only in relation to some of the stunted aspects of his game. Normally a 20 year old draftee who is 6'9" would have some level of skill ability in rebounding, boxing out, interior play, etc. and an understanding of how to use their size. Or an explanation why not. A manchild like Hachimura who came to the game late, for instance. In this case the explanation is that he grew up learning the guard position and was not the tallest kid on the court from day one. No coach was posting him in the front court.

Except for the whole ‘on trial for sexual assault’ thing. I don’t think a rebuilding team with a mess of rookies and youth wants to risk that energy in the locker room.

If they wanted a tall shooter I’d have looked at the Aussie Furphy. Me I think I’d have taken the guy OKC traded for in Dillon Jones. He might be doughy looking too but he can flat out play.
I definitely would have taken Dillon Jones.

Here's an idea!
Let's give this kid a chance.

How about that? :)

His defense has been much better than I expected. The shooting and basketball IQ were always there, but he showed no explosion or jumping ability at all in college and I was terrified that he would be hopelessly outclassed against NBA-tier athletes. I am pleasantly surprised that he is holding up. He looks like a reasonably average NBA athlete.

Night and day difference from SL to pre-season, I totally misjudged that he would look like this so soon, eating crow.

He plays like a veteran already. He is not in any hurry and lets the game come to him. His style of play reminds me a lot of Kyle Anderson.

Size + skills is typically a successful combo. It was hard to get a read on his skills in college due to his small role. Then in summer league it looked like he was trying to do too much.

I know it's just preseason but yeah we may have found a gem at 24.

… or maybe Jared Dudley 2.0, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. Dudley was smart player, and a good 3pt shooter and passer.

He’s currently an asst coach with the Mavs. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Jared become a head coach someday.

i think George is more of a shooter than Dudley, but it's still a terrific comparison.

Dudley never put the ball on the floor very much either. I think George is a more reliable ball handler who will probably at least get to the point where he can run some secondary pick-and-roll.

Yeah he's the only one who is making a point to feed the bigs. I'm appreciating his game. Smooth and unhurried and smart.

What's funny is that I spent more time researching possible draft picks last spring then I had in a long time. But I knew very little about Carrington or George when we drafted them and I like both guys. I paid no attention to either prior to the draft.
