Second Look at Danny Ainge if Brad screws up again.
I'm sure Ainge would come back under new ownership.
Better roster than the Jazz...

If the Celtics don't repeat and anyone in their right mind think it was because they did not have Walker I don't know what to tell you. If you are banking on Walker for a repeat, well, it's not happening anyway.

Anyone thinking Pritchard hitting a few half court heaves will be enough bench offense in this year's playoffs is delusional. We will be going up against much better teams, and a guy off the bench who can win you playoff games is exactly what every playoff team needs. Doubtful we find a better 15th man who would make more of an impact in the playoffs than Lonnie.

If Brad doesn't have something up his sleeve with some bench depth this season, this could go down as his worst move as GM.

Ahh Realgm Celtics board, throwing shade at Brad for not signing a guy that wouldn't crack our top 10 rotation players. Never change my friends (we're one loss from playa-hater calling for Joe's head, that Knicks game is a must win).

I think waiving Lonnie was was the best thing for Lonnie with NY and LA rumored to be interested. Denver is crazy if they don't at least inquire as well. I wish him the best as long as he's not playing us.

I'm confused. Didn't the Celtics have a bench player slot right into the starting line up when their star big man got hurt, play 30 minutes every night and win them multiple games (at minimum game 5 vs the Cavs and game 3 vs the Pacers) ?

Yeah, I'd prefer to have kept Lonnie but we don't need to make this out to be more than what it is here. Our playoff bench is PLENTY stacked with Horford, PP, Hauser, and X. There's more than enough scoring in that group to supplement the best starting 5 in the league when healthy. Lonnie would've been a luxury for sure. In the meantime, we have 3 wings in Springer, Walsh, and Scheierman that we have to continue to develop and figure out what we have there. They should get minutes here and there during the season.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

Celtics had the best bench net rating in NBA (tracked) history last season. Goal is to have more points than the other guy. Our bench did that better than anyone in recorded history.

And by bench, I mean our second unit mixed in with a couple starters. No one does hockey subs in the NBA. Lonnie’s “scoring punch” was a nice-to-have (actually an unproven commodity since it’s not an individual sport), not something that will make or break a season.

It would be a different discussion if we didn’t already have so many players (not talking about just guys 6-14) who are capable of putting up 20+ any given night within the context/flow of Mazzulla ball. If we suffer more major injuries from top guys, this post does not exist.

I am happy actually. I like those minutes going Walsh and Springer.
Walker wouldn’t have made any difference. Just a wasted 10m really.
He is an NBA player though…but we will see if he gets picked up.

I was hoping we would sign him. I always like Lonnie Walker since his Miami days.

In my opinion the Celtics waived Walker IV because they couldn’t find a taker for Springer without giving something up in order for the other team to take Springer. Stevens didn’t want to pay the price so they cut Walker IV. It is what it is.

Unfortunately it’s all about the money. Sign of things to come starting next year

What if Brad pulls this off.

1-Gets Walker in Maine
2-Trades Springer at the deadline to Charles Lee in Charlotte for either their own 2nd or the Pelicans 2nd.
3-Walker gets elevated after that trade and seamlessly fits in for the 2nd push towards #19

Yeah I’m not a fan of this decision. We could really use the scoring punch off the bench.

That's not all we have for bench offense. Ever heard of Hauser or Horford? Tillman and Kornet are good. Pritchard appears to be improved this season too..and does more than half court heaves.

We were like 10 points better than the 2nd place team last year in bench net rating. Spare me.

Green89 wrote:We will be going up against much better teams

That remains to be seen

Green89 wrote:a guy off the bench who can win you playoff games is exactly what every playoff team needs.

Yet 0 playoff teams offered Walker a guaranteed contract this offseason.

Zero.

Face it. The Terance Davis, Austin Rivers, Lonnie Walker, Will Barton, Reggie Bullock, Terrance Ross' of the world aren't that valuable in today's NBA

Green89 wrote:Doubtful we find a better 15th man who would make more of an impact in the playoffs than Lonnie

We don't need a 15th man. You only need to carry 14 guys. Carrying a 15th man would just add to our astroomical tax bill.

And in the playoffs, you only play like 8 or 9 guys. Your 15th man ain't moving the needle in the playoffs. What did Svi and Queta do in the playoffs last year? Nothing

Green89 wrote:If Brad doesn't have something up his sleeve with some bench depth this season, this could go down as his worst move as GM.

This makes no sense. *Every* GM in the league declined to offer walker a guaranteed contract.

At least Boston gave him a chance..at least we brought him on an exhibit 10 deal. Brad was the only GM in the league to give Walker any type of contract this offseason.

And we're the one team that doesn't need Lonnie Walker...because even without him, we're the favorites to win the title:
https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nba?tab=nba-finals

To my knowledge, there has never been a GM in NBA history who has paid $11 mil (that's what we'd pay in taxes + Walker's salary if he was on the team) for a 15th man.

And as Keith Smith explains, 15th roster spot is going unused more and more these days..especially under the new CBA..and with the addition of s 3rd 2-way spot (which means we have 17 guys on the roster..14 standard and 3 2-ways)

https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2487/the-nbas-vanishing-15th-roster-spot
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)
