I'd say you're definitely picking up on what the data says, and I think this is important for people to see, because official MVP voters really didn't seem to be aware of this.

That said: I'm not so quick to assert that this necessarily means Phee is the fundamentally superior player. What data like this can be argued to show was that Phee was more valuable than everyone else, but value comes within that player's context.

I think the most interesting person with this data is actually A'ja, who doesn't really impress, despite the fact that

a) She's impressed in past year.
b) She impressed in the Olympics this year (MVP of that team by the same measures that favor Phee so strongly here).
c) She put up absolutely massive scoring numbers while playing for a team that still had a very successful offense this season.

I do think that A'ja and the Aces need to ask themselves whether focusing the offense so hard on A'ja was ever a good idea given their other offensive talent and the team's disappointing defense this year (given that A'ja traditionally is more known for defense than offense), and the fact this question should be asked isn't exactly a good thing for A'ja's candidacy here, but I'd definitely stop short of saying anything along the lines of "A'ja is overrated" even if I think A'ja scoring volume during the 2024 season is.

And yet, I still may side with A'ja for Offensive POY, because it's not like the Ace offense was unsuccessful like this.

Yeah we may need to be careful not to understate A'ja's offensive impact, but I felt that the Aces were better last season because their attack came from multiple angles with Gray, Plum, Young etc. This year it just felt like A'ja was hard carrying them and it made them nowhere near as dangerous, despite them still being a top 4 team.

That being said, just skimming these numbers, Phee's superstar level two way impact might be where I'd lean towards.

This should in no way influence our esteemed panel :)

Good observation! The immediate takeaway is that this Dream team had major depth issues, and that seems like kind of an encouraging thing for a bad team. If you've at least got a core you can build around, you've got something.

The bad news:

1. Big On-Off is always a good thing, but if it's mostly caused by a horrendous Off, adding depth will only get you to the treadmill.

2. The key On-Off player is Tina Charles, a 35 year-old post-up big volume scoring with a poor shooting percentage (50.1% TS).

So yeah, I don't really see this as evidence that Atlanta's poised to make a leap next year. If they do make a leap, it will likely come with them trying something new.

Hey y'all,

If anyone needs me to postpone the deadline, just ask, I will. It's not important to me that I tally everything up tomorrow, there just has to be a deadline so I picked tomorrow. I can change it.

I just voted, but it looks like people might need a little more time.

I’ll be honest, I looked on the PC board and can’t find where to vote.

Oh, voting thread is on the WNBA board stickied along with this one.

Here's the direct link to the thread though.

Yeah, I just kicked the deadline back to next weekend.

If there's anyone who is wanting to vote, or tempted to vote, but is struggling with the process, I hope they do start a discussion either here or by PMing me.

I want every who likes the W and is willing to put forward their earnest vote to feel encouraged to do so, and so if there are any doubts I can put to rest, I'd like to.

Quoted from the Voting thread:

TheWitcher wrote:These are my humble votes, as a new fan.

Witcher, thank you so much for having the courage to participate. It's easy to feel like "I haven't studied enough to have a vote", but if the community can't start somewhere, it won't build to anywhere. The important thing is to just try your best and look to keep learning, and I want make sure this is a safe place for that.

Feel free to ask any questions going forward,
Cheers,
Doc
