I’d love a high yield draft like an Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Tony Allen haul where we get a few young players to develop coming out of the draft.
The current iteration of this team with Al, KP, White, Jrue … these pieces are going to start to age out and I think this is the right time to restock the younger end of the roster so hopefully in three years we have some young vets ready to step up around the Jays
Brad so far has been really mediocre in the draft though one can’t really fault him for not hitting on guys in the 50s of the draft.
Otoh he’s more than made up for it in the various udfa markets - Hauser, Kornet, Queta have all been good to great in some form or another. Peterson looks like a possible.
Yeah it is encouraging how Brad has scored with bargain basement FAs like Hauser, Queta, & Kornet, but also concerning how little yield he’s gotten from his draft picks.
Brads always been enamored with the Duncan Spurs and how they managed to stay in the mix for two decades, but a significant reason for their longevity was getting plus-level value from guys over performing rookie contracts and just generally drafting well. Outside of the lottery, after the SAS 07 championship, Pop and RC drafted George Hill, Splitter, Patty Mills, Kawhi, Davis Bertans, DeJuan Blair, Cory Joseph, Kyle Anderson, etc.
And then at the end of the run, drafting Dejounte Murray and the D. White both at pick #29. That’s so much talent without ever picking in the lottery.
Once they had TD, Tony, and Manu, finding value at the spot where they were drafting and then finding steals off the bargain bin in free agency like Danny Green and Gary Neal, that’s how they kept it going.
Of course, Brad has done a great job, we won that thing last summer, but a big part of why we’re in luxury tax hell is because we have White, Brodgon, Holiday rather than picks #25, #27, #14 or whatever… and of course I’d take veteran all stars over late first round picks but you can’t have every high minute player making $30 million a year and managing the payroll through hitting on draft picks was sort of like the secret sauce for San Antone
