Next Draft?

Post#1 » by Fadeaway_J » Sat Dec 28, 2024 12:03 am

Goats Franchise Pairs

Spoiler:
Pairs according to the top two franchises for GOAT candidates (from top 10 of the top 100 project in the PC board):

1. Miami Cavs
2. Bucks Lakers
3. Bulls Washington
4. Houston Toronto
5. Philly Warriors
6. Lakers Orlando
7. Minny Boston

Assigned Teams Draft

Spoiler:
Randomly assigned a team from the East and a team from the West, per drafter.

You “draft” 4 players from each team.

No draft per se, but we make our own teams and post the rosters

Only categories allowed (don't have to use all of them):
1 MVP
1 All NBA
1 All Star
1 All D
1 Champ
3 other

We could have 20 teams used, so we could eliminate like the Wizards, Nets, Hawks, etc.

Clubs which won all their championships in a single decade

Spoiler:
1. Sacramento (1950s)

2. Hawks (1950s)

3. New York Knicks (1970s)

4. Portland Trail Blazers (1970s)

5. OKC (1970s)

6. Washington (1970s)

7. Chicago Bulls (1990s)

8. Houston Rockets (1990s)

9. Dallas Mavericks (2010s)

10. Toronto Raptors (2010s)

11. Cleveland Cavaliers (2010s)

12. Denver Nuggets (2020s)

No Multiple All-NBA First Team (redux)

Donut draft - no players between 10 and 18 fga's.

I’d personally prefer a non-pair draft next (though I do like pair drafts we’ve had multiple recently).

I’d play any of these though.

I'd play any of the games. Naturally my favorites are my own ideas lol: Goats Franchises and One Decade Champs. Voted for the latter.

But we should probably run first the no multi first team.

Assigned teams can be run as a non draft, if someone understands the exact limitations we should open a signups for this as well IMO

I can start it later. Was hoping for a few more votes as it might be a divisive idea.

Assigned teams idea is relatively popular and we said it can and should be run as a non draft, which means it can be run in parallel with another draft.

Only problem and reason I didn't open it, or anyone else maybe, is that I didn't fully understand the limitations. E.g. the All-Star player cannot be All-D? The All-D player can't be an all-star? The champ can't have any personal accolades? Can I peak two All-D instead of an All-Star?

What do you think about the following outline:

Ten teams are available to be assigned in the West:
1. San Antonio Spurs
2. Los Angeles Lakers
3. Golden State Warriors
4. Phoenix Suns
5. Dallas Mavericks
6. Oklahoma City Thunder
7. Denver Nuggets
8. Utah Jazz
9. Houston Rockets
10. Portland Trail Blazers

Ten teams are available to be assigned in the East:
1. Boston Celtics
2. Miami Heat
3. Milwaukee Bucks
4. Chicago Bulls
5. Philadelphia 76ers
6. Toronto Raptors
7. Orlando Magic
8. Detroit Pistons
9. Indiana Pacers
10. Atlanta Hawks

Basically I took the top 10 teams with best win-loss records in history, but rearranged them a bit according to my personal judgement of overall depth and attractiveness, e.g. Warriors were bumped from 10th placed to 3rd. I also gave weight to their original location in the list.

I'm open to hear other suggestion of ways to rearrange the list.

Each player is randomly assigned one team from the West and one from the East, while the average location of the assigned team in the list must be between 3 to 6. E.g., you cannot have Boston+Bulls (average position: 2.5) or Spurs+Miami (average position: 1.5), but you cannot have Orlando+Utah (average position: 7.5) or Hawks+Phoenix (average position: 7). Examples for valid combos: Utah+Bucks (average position: 5.5), Suns+Bulls (average position: 4.0).

It won't be necessarily the most balanced, but I'm trying as much as possible to make it more or less balanced.

Also, MadNess' limitations are added: team needs to have 4 guys from each team, and you can use the following spots - MVP, All NBA, All Star, All D, Champ, 3 others. You can "downgrade" one of the categories to a lesser ones, and a higher category can have properties from the lower one (e.g. the All-Star can be an All Defense selectee and a Champ, but the Champ cannot be an All-Star or All-D, etc.)

I think that might be too many categories to players to have

Stick with a MAX of
MVP-2 total MVP winners
All NBA 1st- 1 additional players
DPOY - 1

Rest is open season for choices

And if sorting team by all time WIN%, just pair the absolute best with the absolute worst. (eliminating pelicans because they have a franchise with less than 30 years...seems too small a timeline for all time great players to be obtained)

Meaning
Celtics/Timberwolves
Lakers/Clippers (funny)
Spurs/Hornets
OKC/Grizzlies
Jazz/Nets
Suns/Wizards
Bucks/Kings
Heat/Cavs
Blazers/Magic
76ers/Raptors

I think the only teams that dont have an MVP level player are the hornets, Grizzlies, Kings? but OKC has multiple, Suns has multiple, BUcks have multiple.

Why not have a quick two round draft for people to select their own teams? Also not sure why you need any accolade limits. Also, if we're requiring half the players come from each, how about we limit the amount of fga's you can spend on a given team? Four players could include three bench players.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Honestly I think it's kind of fun to have it randomized.

Rank the teams based on winning percentage. Everyone gets one team from the east, and whatever corresponding western team adds up to 11 in the rankings. If you get the Celtics (number one in the east) you pair them with the Blazers in the west. Simple randomization, I'd rather just have everyone with the same total ranking rather than the wiggle room LR suggested- I think that wiggle room creates unnecessary inequity.

I'd favor doing this one next. Need a short break from drafting.

Regarding accolades limit I think it's necessary. Otherwise you get GSW and then get Curry Klay KD Draymond or you get Lakers and then you can build around Magic Kobe Shaq. This means teams will be ridiculously overloaded in talent and some options are way too overpowered.

Regarding LR's idea my main problem is, as I said, the list needs rearrangement. Having GSW at spot 10th in the West while Utah is at the tops is hardly representative.

Yeah, I like your arrangement better.

We could also have it be by number of playoff wins or series wins.

Gsw isnt one of the teams I listed as i went with alltime win%

And there is a 2mvp limit. So no shaq, kobe, magic possible.

And, imo regarding utah being a choice.

Stockton
Petrovic
KD
Malone
Lopez

Looks pretty stellar to me.

Me and Snake were discussing the list of best records. GSW not being on the other list kinda speaks of why it isn't representative of best teams IMO.

I think two MVPs is too much. It might even be too much to have two Multi Time All NBA First as guys like Kawhi and Wade aren't lesser to MVPs.

And we're going back and forth with possible ideas for this way too much. We need to try to find and concencus or otherwise accept we'll never run this, as we'll just go to more simple ideas instead.

Iron man draft. Must have played at least 82 games in the season selected.

I'm thinking about running the Assigned Teams draft, the version of it that I think is best. We've been back and forth with ideas around it for a while
