Knicks have had KAT on their radar. Not a secret. Last deadline there were rumors. We have enough connections with the Wolves that I am 100% sure that iHart resign was 1a and Towns was 1b.
Everything we did on draft night was to create cap space. So to that point, yes, Diadet being willing to take less was 100% essential in taking him.
I agree with all of that. But why then given Kolek such a fat contract for a 2RP? I mean, they could have trimmed another $1m from the salary there, in principal.
No matter what it is, having 2 first rd picks and not getting anything out of it after trading 4 of your future picks on top of your picks the previous 2 drafts is poor business.
I’m not really sure why Leon gave up on the draft after 2021. Imagine how different things would be if he used his lotto pick in 2022 on Jalen Williams and used other assets to get off Kemba to sign Brunson/I-Hart.
If your going to build a top heavy roster, you need to develop cheap talent.
First, we don't know if we would have drafted Jalen Williams. We would probably have kept Dieng or Duran. More raw rookies in a win-now Thibs team.
Second, squeezing the Brunson and IHart salaries in our cap space was hard. The 4,5M rookie salary would complicate things.
Third, we probably would have been forced to give up the rookie anyway in the Mikal or Towns trades.
Fourth, being a big market contender, we can attract cheap ring chasers to be rotation players. I hope we don't have to be so cautious with the salary cap next season.
