The Santa Ana winds are whipping out here. Some gusts feel hurricane level. Embers flying everywhere. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Already lost power once.

I **** hate fire. Hopefully you aren't too close. If you are questioning whether to stay or go, and you have somewhere to go, then leave. Stay safe mate.

Really monitoring this new Sunset fire in the Hollywood Hills. Only ~4 miles away from our place. Getting go bags ready just in case.

Been out here for 10 years now, I've never seen anything quite like this.

Completely agree. Go early. 200% Aussie approved advice (and, obviously/sadly, this is one of our things).

Don't forget that lots of other people will do the same (waiting). If you have somewhere further away you can go, maybe go sooner. Try and resist looking at everything that's going on around if you do drive - you don't want to have an accidental crash at a time when emergency services are stretched. If you go earlier you will be calmer which is super important if you have a family. Hopefully theres a 'sleepover' option.

Anyone making snacks for the Packers game this weekend? Recipes are welcomed!

I typically do wings in the air fryer but want to try another thing or two.

I'm trying to put together a 5 day snack plan. College football playoffs tonight and tomorrow, NFL playoffs Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I think pizza for one, tacos for one. Then I'm not sure.

I do a sticky garlic+ginger glaze that I'll toss on wings or small bits of pork (cube up some pork loin) yum.

½ cup rice wine vinegar
2 tbsp honey
½ cup packed brown sugar
3 crushed garlic cloves
2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger (can add more for more ginger bite)
1 tablespoon Asian chili paste
1 tablespoon soy sauce

Slowly cook it down until you get a spoon coating delicious sauce

I've keep getting sucked into Youtube shorts and have come across a lot of good food ones. Thinking of making these for the SB.

I used to spend time making food for big sports nights, but I found myself barely eating any of it because I'm so focused on the game itself. I usually try to eat right before or right after, or maybe during halftime (if I've got the time).

One of my favorites was my easy BBQ cheese steaks:

1. Start with a half pound of sliced steak.

Costco sells sliced NY Strip for anywhere from $9-$12 per LB, so I usually buy a 3-4LB package and split it into half pound bags which I stack and freeze. A half pound will give you about 3 cheesesteaks on an 8-10inch hoagie roll. If you don't have a Costco near you or don't want to spend so much, you can buy a cheaper steak, freeze it, and then slice it on your own.

In any event, once you have your sliced steak, I'd chop it into small pieces.

2. Slice and saute a small onion in a bit of neutral oil with seasoning salt and black pepper. Takes about 5-10 minutes on medium heat. At this point, preheat your oven to 350F.

3. Once the onion is soft and translucent, add in your steak, season it with salt and pepper, mix it up with the onion, and saute them together. This should take less than 5 minutes on medium heat. Don't overcook the steak, as it will cook very quickly if the pieces are sufficiently thin.

4. Take off the heat and add a squirt of your favorite BBQ sauce. I usually use SBR, but it's all your choice. Don't feel the need to add too much BBQ sauce. A couple TBS of sauce should be enough to give you a nice BBQ flavor. Mix it all together.

5. Take your hoagie roll. Slice it in the middle. Add the meat/onion combo. I usually top it with some pickled jalapenos and some shredded cheese.

6. Take a pan, line it with parchment or aluminum foil, and place your sandwich on it face up. Toss in the oven at 350F for 5 minutes. Broil for a minute.

Take it out. Add shredded lettuce if you so desire. Slice the sandwich in half. Destroy.

I try to time food to line up with the main game I'm watching, i.e. Packer game or Bucks playoff games. It doesn't always work. With a 3:30 kickoff Sunday I'll have whatever food I'm having ready (or ordered) by noon and just eat for 10 hours off and on.

That steak sandwich recipe reminded me of one. This Philly Roast Pork sandwich recipe is really, really good. With an Instant Pot it can come together in a couple hours.

If you want to be extremely extra and go all out, you can even make good cheesesteak rolls.

It's hard to find good rolls where I live so I've made those a couple times, but I also do dumb baking quite often when average store bought baked goods would have been just fine.

Planning a family trip to AZ in March. Thinking like two nights by the Grand Canyon and two nights in Sedona area to meet up with some in laws. Kids are 4 and 9 year olds. What advice do you have for me?

Anybody ever do DIY mold remediation/removal for their attic? Debating whether to hire specialists or save some money and do it myself if it's not too difficult.

Just a couple of thoughts to consider:

1. It may not be legal in your state to DIY mold removal.
2. Disclosure laws when you sell your home - I would think a prospective buyer would prefer a pro doing this job.

Check out dry ice blasting - https://www.coldjet.com/dry-ice-blasting/applications/remediation/

Good luck!

I mean this is far too vague to give you a legitimate answer. How much growth is there? What is the cause of the moisture in the attic? 99.9% of the time mold is a pretty easy fix.

I can't imagine needing to hire a professional remediation service (which is also going to cost you thousands of dollars), the only times you would need to do that would mean that your entire home is in unlivable condition and you cannot even be there.

I manage large rental properties, and I've only ever had to hire a professional for mold remediation 1 single time in the last decade, and that was due to a shower leaking back into the shared wall between 2 apartments for a year and half. But if you're talking some minor mold from a roof leak, or exhaust fans improperly venting into the attic, or just old school insulation that has become saturated with moisture over the years, that's an afternoon project.

Yeah need more information. People see mold and freak out but the reality is most of it can be scrubbed with cleaner, hit with some kilz and new paint and youre good. The bigger question is did you fix the problem that caused the mold.

Do a day trip up to Page and go see Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. You'll only need one day there for both places. You'll need to get tickets for Antelope Canyon, but horseshoe is free and can be done pretty quiclly.

might as well also put in the lottery for the Wave. it's probably like <1% chance but pretty awesome. that is a full day activity but it's worth throwing out other plans if selected since it's a once in a lifetime thing and the GC will always be there IMHO.

Just be prepared for traffic jams and lots of people. There's some bottlenecks north of Phoenix and right when you get into Sedona. Don't get frustrated and be prepared with snacks, games, tablets, whatever.

You can't avoid the sardines in a can feel at antelope canyon but it's still worth it. Other places, use your time zone difference to your advantage and leave 1-2 hours than you normally would. Turns out most people like to sleep in on their vacations and just getting there 90 min early is the difference between waiting for someone to leave to find a parking spot and being able to park easily and walk through some areas without crowds. So start at the super popular Instagram spots really early and then find places with a 1+ mile hike later to avoid crowds. even at NCs most of the crowds are 1/4 of a mile from the car. If you get past that you start to feel like you are actually in nature.
