We need guys who can carry the second unit and who can get their own buckets when the defense tries to take away Giannis/Dame. They don't need to be high usage in general. They just need to be capable of being a high usage player in short spurts when Dame/Giannis are on the bench. A guy who can run an effective two-man game with either of them.
Khris is obviously capable of that with Giannis. He and Dame haven't quite gotten there, but I actually am fairly certain that they'd play quite well off of one another with more seasoning.
Can LaVine do that?
This is completely fair. As I said, I'd just keep Khris, but Lavine, if he accepted his role, could be a really good fit on offense (he's a 2/3, not a guard exclusively to me).
Play him with Dame as little as possible.
Risky for sure, but a far better choice than Butler to me.
