Bears 10.0: GM and coach watch before the draft

The Bears will likely get more out of Kmet. Yet with an OC that is a TE coach, and an ex Lions head coach that is in tune with the modern TE as more of a weapon, can’t help but wonder how long the Bears go on Kmet. Not that he’s bad. He’s a clear above average TE. But eventually the Bears may go in a different direction.

All draft picks in the next 2 years need to be linemen on both sides of the ball.

Need a fast WR3, a RB, and a safety at some point. I would guess Ben wants that RB to be pretty good too. Swift didn’t get used when Ben had him in Detroit. Not a physical runner. While these positions are not as critical in terms of dire need, they will and should be addressed, and we can draft for those positions while we address the lines via free agency and the draft both.

And to add, the Bears have 2 TE right hit now, and nobody knows if they are good fits with this offense. Either the Bears need to sign another, or draft one to develop.

I get that, and we’d definitely have to operate within reason. But Garret isn’t a normal dude. And when you consider that finding another guy to bookend Sweat has been something that we’ve wanted to do, I think it’d be worth the risk.

Additionally, you and I see this roster differently. I tend to think that this roster is closer to playoff ready than most people do. So that factors into my position as well.

With Myles Garret officially asking for a trade, we should put in a call. Most people probably think our roster isn't good enough for that type of trade, but I would disagree. We need 2-3 new starters on the OL (along with excellent coaching) and a pass rusher. The rest of our roster is mostly set with good to great talent, imo. With that being said, I think the draft capital needed would be to rich for my blood (but I would get over it pretty quick after watching Garret destroy the packers). If we do pursue a trade, I think it should be Trey Hendrickson. He'll be significantly easier to trade for (probably a 2nd) and he'll be cheaper meaning we can allocate money else where.

Personally, if I'm the Lions, I'm doing whatever it takes to get Garret on the roster.

yea, I've seen a couple headlines linking Young to the bears. I think I'd prefer a Mack and Allen reunion. But, i'd be ok with either (or maybe even both?)

Tend to agree. Timing just doesn't seem right. Garrett is 29 and only under contract for two more years. He's going to want a $30mil contract when he turns 31. I doubt the Bears would want to spend that when they'll likely have more pressing needs. Not to mention the draft capital the Bears would likely have to give up during a trade (e.g. potentially three starter quality picks).

I imagine it would be something similar to what we sent to the raiders for Mack. Maybe a little less because I think Mack was younger. I think the three main things to consider (in this order) in a potential trade for Garrett

1. Have we more than adequately addressed the OL. 2-3 new starters and great depth, at the least.
2. What will the Browns be demanding (and how it might compare in a different trade. IE, would 2 1sts and a 2nd for Garret be better than a 2nd for Hendrickson or someone else)
3. Garrett's 2025 cap hit. According to SB Nation, his cap hit would be less than 5m with 18.6 being a roster bonus. (actully with this info, I think there is little to no reason not to trade for him. I think we have 60-70m in cap space right now. his 5m cap hit would be insignificant in addressing the rest of the roster and we have enough cap to make up for whatever picks we will be trading)

sure, good players become available all the time. But, how often are they players who are DPOY candidates every year and potentially a first ballot HOFer? not as often.

No doubt. Would love to have a talent like Myles Garrett on this team. He is better than any other player we have on the roster today. The cost of acquiring him is what gives me pause.

If it's going to cost 2 FRP's and possibly a second, I'd say no. We need to keep building for the future with those picks and preserve our cap space.
