I heard on TNT that since Luka got traded, he's no longer eligible for the supermax deal even though he met the qualifications for it. Is this valid?

Candance Parker stated that this might be a way for teams to get out of paying the supermax and that it might be something that will need to be addressed with the next CBA.

Has Luka played enough games to be eligible for the supermax?

Also once traded he can't sign supermax deal.

I believe he had already done enough to qualify for the supermax. He was definitely eligible before but is no longer.

The "supermax" being discussed here is the Designated Veteran Extension:

7 or 8 years of service when extension signed; 1 or 2 years remaining on contract; with same team continuously (unless traded during first four years in the league); meets Designated Veteran Player 35% Max Criteria

And here are the criteria:

At least one of the following must be true:
The player was named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.
The player was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.
The player was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in any of the three most recent seasons.

Bolded is what would have qualified him previously. Underlined is what disqualified him.

Not only did this trade save money and cap space for DAL, it did exactly the same for the Lakers.

Not only did this trade save money and cap space for DAL, it did exactly the same for the Lakers.

I heard that too and that's wild. A secret deal with no other teams involved that saved both teams $116 mil. Not to mention I heard that this deal also allows LA to be able to bring in another max player as well. How is this not considered shady? Legal loophole I'm sure but wow.

It’s true. In general, if you stay with your own team, your max deal can include an extra 5% of the salary cap. When Luka signs his next max deal with the Lakers, it won’t be for the $345 for five years that DAL would have owed him.

The rule was designed as an incentive to get stars to stay with the markets that drafted them, rather than sign a big contract, then demand a trade to a destination they liked better. But GMs can make trades too, so …!

I think that rule was put in so Star players has more incentive to stay with current team. For situation where Luka wants out but still get the supermax so no incentive to stay. Let's call that the Butler rule. I think they just need to fix the tax so "super part" don't count towards cap. Then is fair to both sides. If Luka really wanted the Super extension, he should stay in shape but I don't know if Mavs had the balls to tell him. It sucked for Luka but overall is a good rule I believe.

You make a good point about the Super Max. Teams with top players are almost being held hostage by the results of an arbitrary vote for the three (3) All NBA teams.

I'd fully support the difference of the Super Max contract not being assessed towards the Cap or affiliated Aprons.

Anthony Davis's contract is kinda gross too with his injury history, he's owed 62 and 66 million at ages 34 and 35.

Luka Doncic is in his 7th season, so he will still be eligible for a 35% after his 10th season, which would be starting in '28-'29.
So he will essentially miss out on the supermax for 2 seasons worth of pay.
If he signs an extension, I expect he would sign a shorter one now that gives him an opt-out in '28-29 so he can get the 35% max he deserves.

Just a brutally awful trade.
Only the Herschel Walker deal even comes close.

KAT for Randle/DDV is a similar disaster just on a smaller scale.
