And?

That isn't that high.

The next highest paid player after our starting 5 is going to be Cooper Flag.

I have questions about “asset accumulation”. Seemingly there was very little market for Ingram because of his salary expectations. So we’re going to pay this guy that no one really wanted and all of a sudden he’s going to be an “asset”?

They're likely thinking they are buying low and that the fit in our system will unlock something like it seems to have done with RJ.

What’s buy low though? We have to pay him this offseason and by all accounts he was looking for big money which is why NOP had trouble trading him. We aren’t exactly a team known for getting players on discount contracts.

Buying low on the talent, I am not thinking we get him on a bargain deal. I am expecting low 40's on a longer deal and mid possibly even high 40's on a shorter one.

A good thread to start this deadline season would have been wagering on if this rebuilding team that is currently tanking would end up in a negative or positive draft equity position by the end of it.

Can't give it less than 60/40 even in this circumstance. Why would a good drafting FO want draft picks anyway?

So the plan is to sit him out the majority of games, not get a good look at him with the rest of the team and then re-sign him for big money without really knowing how he fits on the team? This is an awful plan.

How many games does it require to get a good look?

We are not accumulating "assets" if the "assets" are all slightly overpaid or well overpaid if they turn out injury prone.

Something around 30-35M is fine. 40M and over is Lavine territory

30-35 would be a big paycut based on what Ingram is currently getting. If he’s not even looking for raise (relative to the cap) he’s going to get close to $40m.

It’ll probably be. 1+1 around 37M. My guess

So, they probably do view him as a potential foundational piece. My guess on how a contract looks is something in the low 40's and possibly mid 40's if it's on shorter deal.

Most talented scorer on the roster, but not on the court. If they were going to pay someone mid-40M who only shows up for 50-60 games a season, I'd rather have OG. I get that wasn't the choice. This seems like the very definition of a "Mid-3" core to me, but we shall see.

So we’ll probably have to overpay him. Excellent “asset accumulation” strategy we’ve employed here.

How many timea does it have to be said Masai doesn't think in your binary of compete or tank. It's all about asset accumulation and consolidation.

If we’re not giving him long term money why isn’t he just going to SAS to play with Wemby and Fox for a year?

It doesn’t matter if Ingram is a better player than the Indy pick. That isn’t some gotcha.

The Indy pick is unquestionably an asset.

The minute Ingram signs his extension, he will be a liability. The only thing yet to be decided is how big.

Locking in to (another) inefficient one-way player is a big cost in its own right. This is why I’ve previously said I wouldn’t take him for free.

Have to continue hoping I’m wrong, which is not the best feeling.

I honestly hope that pick ends up being a top 5 pick in 2026 just so everyone saying "it's great value" will shut up.

This team isn't close to making any sort or noise, and we just gave up a 1st. I'd rather have used the pick to move up in the draff if Masai didn't want to keep it. Puke worthy trade IMO.

And sometimes that attempt at 5000 IQ logic leads to really dumb half-measure trades like the one I promised not to complain about anymore.

This is pretty much a no lose trade. Or ...there's little they can lose.

They get Brown and Olynyk off the roster now, and get back to playing rookies and losing.

Ingram misses the bulk of the games this season and they tank.

No other team competing wanted Ingram because he's hurt. They give up a late first in two years for Brandon Ingram, who will be at best the 3rd option on this team by 2026. They could park him in the corner to just shoot threes and he has more value than what they gave up.

The guy is oft-injured. For that price, do they care the next 2-3 years, when they just play rookies, next man up? Or if he's around a short playoff run and misses 20 games....does that really matter that much? That's' why he's so **** cheap. Because he's injured right now and of no use to competing teams. Raptors aren't using that cap space on free agents so this is just punting the tradability of Brown down the road.

Even if they don't sign him, they literally could get more than they just gave up by signing and trading him away in the summer, although that's unlikely.

And what do they give up for not trading Brown and Olynyk elsewhere? Taking on worse players, that might actually play now and take minutes away, and some 2nd round picks down the road? Does anyone GAF for 2nd round picks in 4 , 5 years? Yeah... this is a pretty difficult reach for anyone to say they ever lose this trade badly, beyond some fluke career ending injury. Which I'm sure some of you might quietly hope for.
