Matas got clothes lined I imagine he wasn't in at the end because maybe he was lightheaded or to be cautious. Either way it was smart. Phillips and Patrick can stand to play more minutes. Collins and Smith both move much better than Vuc on both ends and can score in different ways. Vuc is needed less on offense because Giddey, Lonzo, Huerter and Matas can shoot the ball more than anybody they replaced like Terry, Caruso, except of course Lavine.
I still need to see how these players finish the season. I think Lonzo being out makes it harder to win and probably cost them some games. Giddey missing a couple shows you what he brings.
Unless there's a huge change I want to end up with Ball, Giddey, Huerter and Jones. Even with 3 guys injured there are still tooo many guards and few really stand out head and shoulders above the rest. I know that probably means moving on from fan favorites like White and Dosunmu but the roof of the UC didn't collapse when they traded Caruso. Coby looks like he's the man right now, how much money are you willing to pay him when you've seen his entire career? The people who think extending PWill was a bad move, are you willing to pay Coby the big money not knowing if anyone would be willing to offer him that much? There were several off seasons where Ayo made progress, are you willing to bet the money you're willing to pay him that those jumps keep coming? And do you do that before finding out if any other team thinks he's worth a bigger contract?
Huerter at 6-7 plays like he's 6-7, the defense pays attention to him behind the arc. The Bulls don't have a guard who can do the things that Tre Jones can and does. We had Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson, Justin Holiday, CJ Watson who were good at some things but not really floor leaders. Remember the difference Rajon Rondo made because he controlled the ball and the game. Jones isn't at that level but off the bench he does that for the Bulls. In those games we've all seen where they're down 15-18 points, the bench comes in and brings them back so you want to keep them in the game Jones is the type of guy you need to keep that flow going.
I'm generally with you. I think I prefer Jones to Ayo, but definitely don't need both as they play the same role. If we keep Heurter and Jones, then I could see trading Ball too as there is a lot of overlap there.
On Coby, on the one hand, I think SG is the ideal spot to bring in a #1, so if we can trade Coby for a good return, it makes sense. On the other hand, if getting rid of Zach was his catalyst, we have next season to confirm whether this is a hot streak or a true trajectory change. I'll say that it would be pretty hard to actually find anyone via trade, draft or FA given our current assets that is better than Coby is playing now.
Looking at our roster we could definitely benefit from adding a #1 option, but it's not hard to root for this quasi-core of Giddey, White, Ball, Smith, Collins, Huerter and Matas...plus one of Ayo or Jones. The flipside of adding a #1 to that group is that we lose the lift we gained from Giddey and White assuming bigger roles.
