Paolo does not need to dribble between his legs 5x on the perimeter on every possession. If you don't think he likes when he can establish position against a mismatch (just about any single cover in the NBA) and a guy on the perimeter just drops a pass into his sweet spot for that automatic midrange turnaround - you're missing something. Getting Franz and Paolo better shots will only ADD to their threat as they don't have to (always) make their own opportunities. Depending on the matchup in the scenario above, it's almost a guaranteed foul or and-1 opportunity...the perimeter iso stuff is what will make them both playoff destroyers...but increased ball movement and the better shots will keep defenses off their spots and on their heels all season...and, most importantly, bring the rest of the team into the offensive scheme. It will only compound the gravity, the and-1's, the defensive chaos in the opposition, and also the quality of open shots from Paolo and Franz' kickouts to the perimeter and drop-offs to the dunker spot. Lobs are a very telling indicator of an offense getting a defense out of position ...it just leads to mistakes and easy, demoralizing buckets. We rarely see those unless it's one of those "charmed" games where the defense is just running the other team out of the building and turning turnovers into 3 on 1 breaks.
If you want
this, just start Black at PG and shift Suggs to SG. I am not convinced, but Black >> Joseph.
(( we are never gonna agree about an upgrade of SG vs. PG, I fear )).
But I know we agree on this, whatever the question, Anthony is not the Answer.
I don't think that Black is a better PG than CoJo.
I don't even think that Black is a PG
Black is a better, more valuable player than CoJo overall, but he couldn't replace him at PG, imo. My point was "see what even a mediocre TRUE PG can do? Imagine what a full-time, younger, better one could do"...basically same idea I had with an expiring Schroder experiment and, back a few years, an expiring Tyus Jones experiment...none of those guys are the dream starter, but would've been interesting (as it currently is with CoJo) to see what a PG looks like on this team (which many of us - including me - had previously believed we DIDN'T need, but now understand that we do). Even a solid part-timer off the bench to "order" things when they get stuck in mud, would be a big win. That scenario still allows us to play KCP/Suggs, with Paolo & Franz as the primary ballhandlers...until it flounders. Then we bring in a real PG and get things moving. Depending on the matchups and P&F's (and, to some extent, Suggs') progress, that bench PG might play very little or very much - as needed. Black's not that guy - Tyus or Chris Paul, etc might be "better CoJo's", but not necessarily a major shift or financial commitment to our roster.
Or just upgrade our starting lineup with a PG who can also shoot and score...like the guys we discuss all day (Simons, Sexton, Coby, CJ, Reaves, Herro...)
