agreed.
and lets play a hypothetical....
* Giannis asks out of the Bucks
* Giannis has Knicks as one of his teams he uses leverage to go to.
Now, what do we have to trade?
* All the negative nancies correctly state we gave up our "warchest" of draft picks...
* However, they act as it both Towns and Mikal don't have value themselves as is!
* Didn't we just see Luka get traded for (primarily) Anthony Davis?
*
Isn't it possible we could put together an offer of (some combo of)
----- Towns (direct "replacement" to Giannis, both in terms of position and contracts)
----- Mikal
----- Mitch
----- Deuce
------ Kolek/Hukporti/other rooks
------ any other draft capital that frees up this offseason?Potentialy leaving us with: Giannis/Brunson/Hart/OG/any pieces not dealt from above... then hope Leon can scrap together the rest? Yes, we'd be thin at first, but you don't get Giannis for nothing.
You can also make this 3-way trade (or multiple trades), get picks for some of the above players, and flip those back into a Giannis deal? I'm sure TOwns/Mikal/others could be traded for a collection of 1st rounders around the league. Everyone acts as if it Towns/Mikal don't still have very good value. Draft picks arent the ONLY assets in trades.
Everyone just assumes Giannis would be dealt for just picks. I'm not saying its going to happen or even liekly, but the Knicks aren't as boxed in as many are pegging them to be. Towns just had a literal All-NBA year (prob 3rd team?) and despite his defensive flaws, is still a very valuable trade chip. We can afford to reship out Bridges if need be (many don't like him to begin with!), or (gasp) maybe OG is the piece here (I'd prefer to keep OG, his defensive eliteness is a key ingredient to playoff succes).
Don't sleep on a KAT-for-Giannis type deal, especially should (when?) the Knicks disappoint this playoffs. I predict they beat Detroit in 6, then lose to Celts in 5 or 6 next round.
Have faith in Leon, despite the relative disappointment of the Mikal deal, this isn't a sunk cost; we will have ability to flip valuable "win now" players ina deal, and as we saw, not every team is looking to do a total rebuild when their superstar demands out (see Dallas).
