It will cost the Cavs an extra 45M over the next 5 seasons. They will be a 2nd apron team now. Say goodbye to Ty Jerome this summer.
There's no reasonable way for the Cavs to stay below the 2nd apron unless Brooklyn wants to take Hunter and/or Strus off our hands. So the Cavs may as well assume they're above the 2nd apron the next two years and worry about 2027-28.
Hunter, Strus, and Okoro will all be free agents then, which is enough salary shedding to duck under in the 2027 offseason with any contract we would or would not have offered Jerome. The money on the table for him will be the same (the most we're allowed to offer him) and the years will also probably be up to him. We'd lose him to more money from another team either way.
Whether the Cavs pay for Sam Merrill or not is more in question, I don't think we lock him into more than two years although we can pay him whatever we want. I could see another team offering him more money or more years than the Cavs are willing to commit to.
