I mean put a deal in front of me and maybe? But I'm assuming unless you get stupid Minnesota would match any reasonable offer and I would expect Naz to give them that opportunity. And of course Memphis literally can match any reasonable offer. Yes, Brooklyn can put some timing pressure on them but the more team friendly you make the deal, the more likely Memphis figures out how to match.
I think if you really liked Aldama, you offer him something that starts over the full MLE, but declines as you suggest, and call Memphis and say normally you would pay us for the TPE, but we are going to give you a 2nd to trade him to us so we can structure it more attractively.
But even then I'm probably passing. I want my stars in place before I start locking up long-term role players that may or may not be good fits.
Normally i would agree with you but several factors make this a good move to make to me
1) rising cap makes a front loaded deal even more of a bargain in future years
2) the teams are hard pressed to match so wont need to overpay that much
3) no other team with capspace = no bidding war
4) stretch bigs are not exactly available in abundance. If it was a combo guard sure but a stretch 4/5 is harder to find.
Aldama lack of strong D will cap him out as your 5th best starter even with more improvement. I just don't like locking in those type of guys when you still don't even have a single building block in place in Brooklyn. Especially in a destination market that can really leverage their cap space in a possible star free agent signing. Now if you can get either guy on a deal that is universally seen as a bargain due to their unique market position then I could see it since then they are playable liquid assets. Just dubious that they sign either guy to such a sweet heart deal but I would target Naz ahead of Aldama since his D is good enough to keep him on the floor in more lineups.
BRK should make a 22M AV offer to one of Reid or Santi. With the rising cap that amount will only be 11-12% of the cap sheet. That is reasonable money even if you project those guys to be 4th / 5th starter caliber. Each also brings a much in demand skillset as a stretch big. Throw in they can front load and I think its a smart move by BRK. Santi and Naz are ideal shooting bigs to play off a star.
