At the same time, put more of the burden on him to perform. They had a huge advantage over other teams because he wasn't making any money on his rookie deal. Well, that's no longer the case.

Fwiw I'm not saying Darnold will be great either. Just that it makes sense from a financial & team outlook perspective. Instead of committing long-term to a guy like Purdy. Who did struggle at times this past season.

Dak had fully guaranteed 240m for 4 years. Purdy's guaranteed is 36million per year, that's difference of 24 million per year in guaranteed money. And Purdy signed his contract 2 years later.

I am against paying quarterbacks in principle but I thought he would get at least around 60m per with a lot more guaranteed, surprised he gave Niners a team friendly deal after making peanuts first three years.

Darnold didnt outplay Purdy, Darnold with the best weapons in the league barely outplayed Purdy with Niners' C team. When they had the same teams Purdy was light years ahead.

He got the Baker Mayfield contract. Which is essentially a mid-level deal for a mid-level QB without a ton of guaranteed money beyond the first year. That's smart business.

Teams get in trouble when they hand out top of the market contracts for QB's who aren't that caliber of player. This is not the case with Darnold.

If you're going to give a guy that kind of money, I would expect him to be able to elevate the rest of the team.

Purdy wasn't great last year compared to the previous season but the team fell apart due to the defense
