You should never pay a game manager that much money. Just an awful deal
They should've signed Darnold instead.

They would've gotten similar production out of him & not had to commit long-term. Just a 2 or 3 year deal. Which would've saved them a boatload of money.
But the 49ers already know Purdy is better than Darnold.
You put Darnold in that offense & there isn't much of a difference. Darnold had a better year this past season. They're both fits for that system. Which is the argument for why you don't break the bank for Purdy. He's been good, but not great. By paying him, you make it more difficult to put together a roster that can compete. At the same time, put more of the burden on him to perform. They had a huge advantage over other teams because he wasn't making any money on his rookie deal. Well, that's no longer the case.
Fwiw I'm not saying Darnold will be great either. Just that it makes sense from a financial & team outlook perspective. Instead of committing long-term to a guy like Purdy. Who did struggle at times this past season.
