Bridges is one of his closest friends, and they all dreamed of playing together in the NBA. I wouldn't be surprised if Brunson said, "Get me Bridges and I'll agree to a lower contract to help the salary cap."
I think the lesser contract has more to do with Brunson's dad. And also Jalen Brunson getting some kind of back loaded contract or MSG/Knick role later in life.
If it was about friendship(s), I'm not sure the Knicks would have traded DDV. And maybe they would have kept Ryan Arcidiacono lol.
Now, we are in an offseason where somebody like jHart could get traded. I believe Brunson was smart enough to realize his Nova friends aren't guaranteed to be here and it's not a valid reason to take less money.
