He would have to agree to an extension of some sort. Knicks haven't operated with letting someone get to free agency.
Similarly we probably know pretty quickly if Mikal is staying or going. He will get his extension if he doesn't take it he will probably be on the trade block (they didn't trade all those picks to risk that). Similar situation with Mitch
The knicks won't be operating as a team under the cap so losing KD 50 MM the following year we won't be able to get cap space from losing him. It would basically go into the abyss.
If they did let KD walk and let Mikal and Mitch walk or traded them for an expiring and some draft assets or cheap players I believe the only major contracts they would have on the books are Brunson and OG for around $80M and Hart's expiring for almost $21M. I see the cap at $170 next offseason.
I'm not suggesting that they should do it but would provide an option to make a true pivot from this current core. They could also trade Hart for an expiring this year and keep Mikal while still having a decent amount of money to throw at another player. There are some options if KD walks I believe.
Your basically then trading KAT, Mikal, and Mitch for cap space after next year. That would be a horrible use of resources.
You are extending Bridges or you are recouping a lot of the assets your traded for him. Zero chance they let him walk.
They have had many horrible uses of resources including the Mikal trade which they could try to recoup some value from along with an expiring if they wanted to. Once i'm not suggesting that they do it but it does give them room to pivot if they are willing to concede that last offseason may have been a mistake.
