Brown has coached under Pop, Kerr, and Carlisle. By all accounts he’s a highly intelligent guy with high ball IQ and good character.
Looking at his resume…
He got 4th yr LeBron with zero help to the Finals in 07’ (with 50 wins). No shame in losing to his mentor Pop & Duncan.
Afterwards, the Big 3 Celtics formed, who knocked them out of the playoffs twice out of the next 3 yrs. In two of those years, Brown got LeBron and the bum Cavs to 66 & 61 wins.
His first year with the Lakers was successful record wise (0.621) but lost to a much younger and talented OKC team that also beat the Spurs and went on to the Finals.
The 2nd year in LA was tough considering the new additions of 38 yr old Nash and injured D.Howard joining a 34 yr old Kobe and 32 yr old Pau. He tried to implement a modified Princeton offense to help take pressure off of aging guys like Nash n Kobe, and the numbers showed it was actually producing top tier results on offense despite TOV’s (expected with new players and system), but their defense was really bad (likely due to aging and injured players). Record wise their start was rough and they canned him…
That being said, that doesn’t sound like some kind of career loser to me. Especially with what he did with that sorry SAC roster. Fox & Sabonis is worse than Brunson & Randle by far. Was he really supposed to win a title with that?
Honestly his history with Lebron is what tainted his reputation that he wasn’t a good coach just that he had Lebron, but looking back those teams were pretty putrid outside of Lebron and the success they had is still notable.
Then LA happened and the way the Lakers fired him for D’antoni (who also struggled with that aging roster) added to his bad public reputation
The Kings job definitely have rehabilitated his reputation because that was another most bad roster and he got them to a good place.
He would definitely need an associate head coach, his X and O’s are respectable but the associate HC in Sacramento who got hired by the Nets helped a lot with their offense,
