That isn't a superstar offer nor is it an offer that Indy would part with Siakim. Who by the way if was paying attention is an all star, the ECF MVP, and probably the finals MVP had the Pacers won. So no thanks, do better.
If this has been three years ago before the Blazers traded Dame and Siakam was three years younger I would have no problem paying fair value for him but it is 2025 Dame is gone and Siakam is 31 years old. It just doesn't make sense for the Blazers to make such a trade at this time in their rebuild. Especially since Siakam will earn $45 million , $49 million and $53 million over the next three seasons.
OK... but Jerami Grant is 31 years old, and is making 32, 34, and 36. Ayton is making 35. So it's not like this is all brand new money - it's replacing some pretty bad money on Grant
I’ll admit that I paused to really consider the proposal for Siakam. I think it is fair, and I think it is bold. And I agree with the financial comparison you made. My hesitations are his age, and the picks going out limiting follow up moves that push us further into contention. It kind of feels like anything can happen in the East and I’d probably quickly say yes if Portland were East. In the West it feels like chips be pushed in too early and backfire. Most of the team does not feel ready, and if it takes them multiple years, the Siakam may be declining by then.
BUT….
Let’s breakdown the Blazers path if they did make this move.
Lineup:
Scoot/McConnell
Simons/Sharpe/Thybulle
Deni/Camara
Siakam/Obi
Clingan/(Siakam)/RWIII
I actually like this lineup a decent amount. An underrated aspect of the proposal is the added depth of McConnell and Obi. I’ve seen it pointed out that we may not want to push one of Deni or Camara to the bench, but that is a good problem to have. I think at times if they want to go big, Deni can play some point or Camara can play some SG. Or “small ball” that isn’t too small with Siakam at center, then Deni and Camara in their more natural positions. I’d still like more defense at guard positions, but follow up trades can be made. It is pretty crazy that Blazers retain the 2029 1sts in a Siakam trade. We could still trade the more valuable of those paired with salary for another upgrade. Honestly, the more I look at this, the more I like it. F*ck it, I’m in!
Edit: Well, Blazers got their defensive guard in Jrue lol.
