I don't know how the CBA works with picks for players anymore, so I'm not sure how possible it is. But if we go guard/wing at 12, I'd be willing to trade Ayo for a second first rounder to get a big. And I'm a big fan and believer of Ayo, and think when he returns from injury (if not traded) he's going to fit perfectly with our new style.
I don't think there will be a 2nd first rounder who is better than Ayo. At least not for us.
It’s a balance issue. Ayo, much as I love him, is a role player. And a guard. My hypothetical is only triggered if we draft another perimeter player at 12. With all the interesting bigs in this first round it’s a good opportunity to balance the roster while taking another swing. Gotta give to get.
Ayo is my favorite Bull. I go to every Bulls game in my current city (for the past 20 years), which was San Antonio, Portland, and now Houston. The only jersey that I own of a current player is my Illini Ayo jersey. At the last game against the Rockets, he scored like 35 points. I felt magnificent with my Illini Ayo jersey. "You can't stop Ayo" I told the random people around me.
He just seems perfect for our lineup. Lengthy defender who excels in transition and can hit the 3. Can cut and play off-ball.
But then you have to weigh Ayo against Coby, and I really like Coby as well. Coby has worked extremely hard on his handle and defense. He's a natural scorer. I couldn't pick between the 2 of them but that's going to be necessary. Ayo will be cheaper so that could swing decisions.
To your point, Ayo could probably be a wing though. He's a "guard" in a long body. He's a really solid compliment to Giddey at the PG spot and gives us some POA defense.
Draft Newell, Sorber, or Beringer.
Ayo/Giddey/Pat/Matas/(Newell/Sorber/Beringer) would be a really fun lineup. Big, fast, defensive. Newell could also contribute in 3pt shooting, although Pat would need to guard bigger body guys.
