It's easy to look from afar and think it's a lot of money for a bench player.....and maybe it is. But
The biggest thing to understand is that he is a cult hero in Minnesota. He is more of a fan favorite in this market than Anthony Edwards.
When people with the organization talk about core building blocks for the future, it is Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Naz Reid. They put their money where their mouths are too. Remember Jaden was the guy the Minnesota front office refused to include in the Rudy Gobert trade, even though he hadn't even been a full-time starter to that point. And they ended up signing him to a 5/131 deal.
I don't necessarily think it's an issue with the player or the money, but rather the roster composition. Spending nearly $91M on 3 bigs isn't exactly smart when it comes roster construction. It seems like the writing is on the wall that either Julius Randle or Rudy Gobert's days in Minnesota are numbered. My guess is Randle, but they did just draft two centers.
