Re: Schroder's gone
I'm disappointed that we lost Schroder and didn't get Monk back in return. I would have been happy either way - bringing back Schroder or S&Ting for Monk.
Schroder's contract looks pretty OK to me. It's not a situation like NAW's, where I was happy we didn't get him.
So, Duncan Robinson maybe? That's a pretty mediocre second prize.
PG: Cunningham/Sasser
SG: Ivey/LeVert/Lanier
SF: Thompson/Robinson/Holland
PF: Harris/Fontecchio/Klintman
C: Duren/Stewart/Reed

Re: Schroder's gone
Disappointed we didn’t get an asset, even though I was not wild about the fit of Monk.
Hopefully there are still other avenues to improve this team. The current roster feels like a step backwards.

Schroder was our 2nd best player in the playoffs. He's a dog and he rises to the pressure. And his arrival here added a dynamic the team hadn't had. If that's not hard to come by, then go get it, because now it's not here.
.
That says more about the team around him's performance, more than it does about Schroder.
Lots of folks around here didn't want Schroder at the TDL..... Because he's Dennis Schroder
Is that right? I don't remember it that way... Maybe some, but I think most posters here understood the need for a good backup PG. Schroder was that, and it didn't cost Detroit much to take him on...
Yeah, there was definitely a consensus that Pistons needed a backup PG. Ball and Sexton were the fanbase's darlings at the time.
When rumors started to leak out that Schroder might be headed to Detroit as part of that 4 team trade, I remember some folks weren't thrilled.
In any event, your comment of "didn't take much to take him on," is noteworthy. Guys of Schroder's caliber are frequently picked up for cheap. We are a long way from the season starting, let alone locking in the roster for remainder of the season/playoffs.

A loss, sure. A catastrophic team breaking type of loss, I'm not so sure.
Journeyman type guys frequently have spiked production/performances (coincidentally those frequently happen in contract years.) If Beasley proved to be a consistent asset, he wouldn't be constantly passed around the league like a hot potato. Especially when he's never been all that expensive.
Agree.
Schroeder had a good run in DET. However, that is typical of Dennis at the end of a contract. Dennis has the talent to be one of the better 6th-man, but at each of his last half dozen stops, he has chafed whenever he doesn't get to start etc.
Beasley had a career year. I wasn't really expecting him to repeat it, either on the Pistons or elsewhere. I think he was/is good value at the TPMLE or below, and was hoping we could keep him on a nice contract, but I'd be leery of paying more.

This!
Schroder and Beasley are not irreplaceable talents, and their roles won't be super difficult to fill.
Some people are making it seem replacing Schroder/Beasley is a code red similar to having to try and replace Ben Wallace in '05.

The Pistons can operate over the cap only if they take back a significant salary in exchange for Schroder. They'll otherwise be a cap space team by default -- unless they manage to swing something highly improbable sign-and-trade with a big one-plus-non-guaranteed contract to THJ -- and LeVert and Reed will fit right into cap space.
Teams can't just *choose* to operate above the cap; they need to actually *be* above the cap in order to do so.
I thought we might be over without Dennis. Haven’t looked at it all that closely.
We can be an over the cap team either way if we want. Beasley counts $7.2 million towards the cap and THJ counts $24.3 million until we either renounce his rights or he signs elsewhere.

Ah okay. I thought I remembered that the cap hold exceeds the players previous salary.
We could “choose” to be over the cap by not renouncing him.
The way Crymson was talking it sounded like he knew more- that even with that we were below the cap.

The MLE also counts towards the cap $14.1 million unless we renounce it essentially to become a below the cap team. You get the MLE even if you're below the cap as long as you're less than $14.1 million below the cap.

Yeah I understand that. If we’d renounced everyone we would have been above that 14.1 mark in terms of space. Guess there wasn’t anyone worth that.
My guess is we explore trade options and if we find nothing we re-sign THJ.

How is 4 years at $62 million undesirable for a big wing that can shoot, handle, and defend but you would've been good with 3 years and $60 million for a short, streaky combo guard that doesn't defend? Don't forget Schroeder also turned down that 80 million contract with LA years back.
3/45 is a good reason to leave.

I think its possible we had a deal lined up to trade Font to offer Naz Reid a big deal..... or we may have operated as a below the cap team if we could have made an offer sheet to Aldama..... but by the time FA hit that was no longer an option for us. We could have offered Aldama about 4 years $80 million if we wanted him to be our PF of the future.... but Memphis likely still would have matched it.
John Collins will be a FA next summer and he shares an agent with Cade... he's a realistic PF of the future type target but we'll almost certainly only have MLE $ to operate with next summer so with a 7% increase we'd be able to offer him essentially $15.1, $15.8, $16.5, $17.2 over four seasons total about 4 years $65 million. Here clearly isn't perfect but he would slot in decently with his skillset between Duren and Ausar in a starting front court.
19 and 8 shooting 40% from deep and 28 years old next summer he might be too good to get for MLE $.

And a starting job and the Kings (or whatever team he is on assuming he doesnt' get waived) will have full bird rights 3 summers from now.

Re: Schroder's gone
There's no way we were keeping Schroder with the Kings willing to offer that.
And at the end of the day they didn't have much reason to just give us Monk. And TL was right to balk at giving up significant assets for him (IMO).

We'd have to make it a three team sign-and-trade with Monk going to Utah, Schroeder/Font going to Sacramento, and Collins going to Detroit.
Otherwise we don't have enough salaries to send off to get Collins who makes $26.58 million this season.
