Re: Schroder's gone
Boy that's a huge trade exception. I really love the flexibility that gives this team. Yes I think there's more holes/question marks after this free agency that we all had hoped for going in. But this now let's out work out the kinks early in the season, see what the weaknesses are and who needs to get shipped out. Now they can make a trade to upgrade a player when things become more clear. Hell worst case scenario, you like your guys and just add another guy for cheap. We got paid a 2nd to take on Dennis Schroeder at $9M, and now we have $14.8M to spend.

Re: Schroder's gone
Does anyone know if Atl waived LeVert's cap hold? They probably did but it would be really crazy to arrange a sign and trade with them into the TPE we just got and still hold onto our MLE.

The TPE is a good thing. It’s as if we are getting a player (to be named later) back in this trade. I’d bet we’re using it. And for just a SRP to get a mid salary kind of guy like a Sam Hauser or such? Of course we’re hoping for a backup PF. Good job TL!

It's a much better outcome than taking on monk.theBigLip wrote:The TPE is a good thing. It’s as if we are getting a player (to be named later) back in this trade. I’d bet we’re using it. I have faith in TL getting us some PF depth.

Duren - Stew - Reed
Tobias - ???
Ausar - Robinson - Holland
Ivey - Levert
Cade - Timeshare - Sasser
+$14.8M Trade Exception + Bi-annual exception (which I assume will be saved) and all of our picks.
Honestly it's not awful if they can get a PF. There's definitely a lot of depth. Hell, Holland is going to be fighting for minutes.
I'd love a more natural backup PG, but Cade is going to play 35 minutes a game and Ivey and Levert splitting 13 minutes a game isn't the end of the world.
Really just need to find our PF, which also might be our PF of the future with Tobias coming off the books. Dumping Reed and/or Sasser at the trade deadline could free up a lot of space too. Could potentially get like a $22M guy here.

How does adding a bad salary make it a more tradeable asset?
The Pistons already have a couple of match level salaries to add in a trade in Harris and Stewart to a lesser extent if they wanted to go big fish hunting so I don't understand the logic of adding a bad contract and call it moveable in adding anything meaningful in which the Pistons are likely adding assets to move it if Monk gets lost in the rotation.

TPE is basically MLE level contract know. What MLE PF's are available for trade?
Weaver = Hinkie
VW to Portland

Re: Schroder's gone
A decent sized TPE is one of those things that you would rather have than not have. Most likely, it won't bear much substance, but you never know what opportunities might come across your desk. Having the little bit of flexibility the TPE provides, does have value. For all we know, if might lead to Detroit getting a late 1st for being the facilitator in a 3 way or something.
Regardless of the eventual outcome, the flexibility was worth the cost of a 2nd. At the very least, it probably wouldn't be all that hard for Detroit can to recoup a 2nd by using the TPE to absorb an unwanted contract from a team wanting to get out of luxury tax.

Re: Schroder's gone
If anything it's a smarter manipulation of the cap rules than Weaver executed
Does the TPE ever eventuate in anything? Maybe, maybe not.
But it's better than the Joe Harris trade or a bunch of other scenarios we can all being up.
You can sit beside Sam Presti or David Giffin and learn something. Or you can sit beside them and learn nothing.
Hope springs eternal. New GM. New hope.
This franchise has been a disappointment for damn near 20 years.

Re: Schroder's gone
Vast majority of TPEs go unused and basically just save the team money (it's a contract they don't have to pay out). Would be great if we get someone in that slot, but not holding my breath.

We’ve used lime 4/17 in the last ten years or something like that, league wide usage of the TOE is like this

Re: Schroder's gone
I think the fact that we traded a second suggests we do likely use it. PJ Washington's contract would fit nicely as he may be the odd man out in Dallas's crowded frontcourt.

Aye, it was an adroit feat of cap management that gave the Pistons the options of operating above or below the cap.
VicVinegar wrote:Wow, that's freaking awesome for only a 2nd! It says trade exceptions expire in one calendar year, so in theory could the Pistons use the exception on the 2026/2027 team? That much money might play a role in replacing Harris coming off the books with our next PF.
They'll have the use of it for one calendar year after the trade is completed, so it would last a day past the end of next offseason's moratorium.
Bear in mind that the TPE can't be combined with another exception or with salary. It can be used only to take in by trade one player whose salary is less than ~$14.35m or multiple players whose salaries add up to no more than that amount.
VicVinegar wrote:Awesome, I was just thinking how the Reed signing might have originally been reported as A BAE and I was thinking wouldn't it have been smarter to just sign Reed normally? Great if we have the BAE too.
Reed's Early Bird rights traveled over by the waiver pickup, then persisted after he was waived because he re-signed with the Pistons.
Pharaoh wrote:So we operated as an over the cap team, not under? Is there a situation that would have allowed us to work the system so that we still have the MLE and not the TPE?
1 - trade Fontecchio for Duncan
2 - resign Reed and Schroeder
3 - S&T Schroeder to the Kings
4 - Acquire LeVert into TPE from Atlanta
Could that have worked? Assuming obviously LeVert starting salary is = to the TPE of course
Yep, they operated above the cap.
I believe that scenario would've worked, but it appears that they opted to not pursue it.

Interesting, but they can definitely get creative. For example, acquire a $14M player from one team using the exception. They can then turn that player around and Reed and Sasser's non-guaranteed contracts ($8M) and I think in theory they can get up to 125% of that return back in a trade? Which would be a $25M+ player.

Yes. This is the play. Find a team that's desperate to get off a contract. Lots of teams are over the luxury tax right now too. Use our TPE to help them out. Then at the deadline do your idea.

Consider the TPE insurance in case someone gets injured this season and they need something to use in a trade.

Who's gonna need us to save them those tax dollars?
Vet minimum for a backup PF for us.
Save the BAE for next summer.
Use TPE by deadline which will hopefully get us an asset like a draft pick by saving a team cash. And be able to use that new player along with Reed and/or possibly Tobias for our new PF of the future.
Thats just my prediction though

Re: Schroder's gone
Some players that aren't necessarily all that helpful to us but teams might want to unload and compensate us and players where we would be the ones compensating;
Grant Williams
Brandon Clarke
Royce O'Neale
Some that might need us to sweeten the pot;
Sam Hauser
PJ Washington
Obi Toppin
There's also some centers that teams might look to get out from under their contracts as well
