For what it is worth, I think that we should pump the brakes a bit. The reality is that Draft order wouldn’t be significant impacted by a single Summer League performance.

That said, I do kind of wonder if Joan Beringer and his agent pushed him to Minnesota because he wanted to be in a safe developmental environment where he could learn from his mentor Rudy Gobert. His size and freakish athleticism makes it seem like a random Lottery team should have gambled on him.

Jon K has an article out today. Definitely did not push him to Minnesota. He had traveled around the country doing workouts with other teams. They didn’t think he would fall to 17. Minnesota wanted a workout right before the draft, and the agent made Minnesota travel to Chicago, where he was based, as opposed to Joan coming to Minnesota. And after that workout, he was our guy. We tried to trade up for him on draft day but got lucky he fell. Teams always say that, but I 100% believe it in this case.

And yeah, let’s pump the breaks. He could be terrible on Saturday and, honestly, he’s 18, that’d be expected. And I doubt he gets consistent minutes this year, outside the games where Rudy takes the day off.

But as a future Rudy replacement, he looked incredible in game #1.

Yep only 1 SL game and I'm convinced. He's going to be a very good player. Probably won't score enough to get the accolades, but I think he'll be a player that gets us wins.

The Joan Beringer Thread

This guy barely speaks English. It will be a long development process, but there is a lot of optimism. Joan is a big investment, but return can be huge.

Jon K. has a terrific piece about the lead up to drafting Joan.

[Alonzo] Gee spent eight seasons in the NBA as a resourceful, defensive-minded role player. He accompanied the Wolves to Chicago to test Beringer’s response to physicality and quickness. Gee is used to seeing the taller players in a draft come in with a lack of strength, a little too skinny to hold their position on the block or stand up to a shoulder in the chest. However, what stood out most about Beringer was his solid base. Gee had trouble moving him.

“I didn’t know he was 18 at first. But when they told me, I was trying to push him low and he was able to keep his balance,” Gee said. “When he was attacking the basket, he kept his balance and kept his dribble. Even on the drives, I was trying to get around him, and I got around him, but he still made me change my shot with his length.”

Joe Connelly was tasked with running the workout while Tim, Lloyd and Demps watched from the sidelines. Each drill was designed to test Beringer’s physical makeup and his aptitude for the game.

“It’s so rare for a guy that size at that age, most of the time like they’re gangly and their body is catching up with them,” Joe Connelly said. “But his base is so strong and his footwork is so clean, like it was it turned into a real competition.”

What impressed the Wolves even more than the footwork, body control and defensive tenacity was Beringer’s competitive spirit. They knew he was tired. However, he never tapped out. He never asked for water breaks or to back off, even when Connelly and Gee were intentionally fouling him during a layup drill to see how he played through contact.

“I always try to give my maximum,” Beringer said. “Honestly, they pushed me very, very hard, and it was a strong workout. Very good experience for me.”

While I think that it is an ideal situation for Joan to learn and develop his body and game behind Gobert making the most heavy lifting tasks, I also think that there is an opportunity for Joan to contribute right away. I mean I don't want him to compete with Jokic, Zubac, Giannis etc. BUT how many times in last three seasons MIN got killed on the glass by guys like Missy? How many times a random opponent player put a great performance against our frontcourt by simply playing hard?

Beringer will have rookie mistakes such as moving screens, weak fouls and missed rotations, but as long as he plays hard he should play all minutes when Gobert and Reid are not playing well.

Flagrant Howls discussing the Beringer debut. A revised box score only credits him with 6 blocks taking a SL game record away from him. His 9 stocks were also a record so he may have lost that too.

They brought up his only 2 fouls which I found very significant. They mentioned how young big men always tend to have foul problems.

I wanted Yang for potential and Clayton Jr for fit and we got Joan in the middle. Yang and Joan is like Jokic and Gobert. It will be interesting to see how their "arc" compare in the future. Clayton seems to be playing well and that is not the Wolves pick traded to Jazz :)

A language barrier sure wouldn't help, but he speaks well enough so it's not a hindrance. Joan of Development Arc. AAARRRROOO!!!!

There’s these things called translators.

Having a human translator or translation device definitely helps. I live in a Spanish speaking country and learning, but have a long ways to go.

Using names like Jokic and Gobert are pretty unfair. I do understand the idea, but more realistically it's like Vlade Divac and Dwight Howard....skilled big man limited athleticism vs raw big man with great athleticism...
