For what it is worth, I think that we should pump the brakes a bit. The reality is that Draft order wouldn’t be significant impacted by a single Summer League performance.
That said, I do kind of wonder if Joan Beringer and his agent pushed him to Minnesota because he wanted to be in a safe developmental environment where he could learn from his mentor Rudy Gobert. His size and freakish athleticism makes it seem like a random Lottery team should have gambled on him.
Jon K has an article out today. Definitely did not push him to Minnesota. He had traveled around the country doing workouts with other teams. They didn’t think he would fall to 17. Minnesota wanted a workout right before the draft, and the agent made Minnesota travel to Chicago, where he was based, as opposed to Joan coming to Minnesota. And after that workout, he was our guy. We tried to trade up for him on draft day but got lucky he fell. Teams always say that, but I 100% believe it in this case.
And yeah, let’s pump the breaks. He could be terrible on Saturday and, honestly, he’s 18, that’d be expected. And I doubt he gets consistent minutes this year, outside the games where Rudy takes the day off.
But as a future Rudy replacement, he looked incredible in game #1.
