AK keeps going for these soft skill Center types who can play on the perimeter a bit, make connective passes without actually creating assists, and move decently on offense but have no chance of being a defensive monster in the paint, which is what 29 out of 30 teams need at Center. His 5 position is built on guys that might succeed in Europe but get killed by someone as unathletic as Tyler Herro when he drives into the paint 30 times in a play-in game.
Even the 5 projects with some bit of physicality like Sanogo or Alize are too small to block shots. He just doesn't get that you need to defend the rim to get past a .500 record.
Yeah personally I’m a little confused by using roster spots and 2-ways on guys with next to zero NBA potential. That includes some of the guards he held for a while (Dotson).
I just don’t see Lachlan having too much of a chance. His athleticism and length seem below average to me. You can’t just be tough. If that was the case, then Alize and Sanogo would have had great careers.
So far, AK’s choices in big men has been like… 0% hit rate.
Gafford, Kornet, Wendell, Lauri, Thad out > Vuc, Marko, Bradley in
Between the departed, you have a ring, finals appearances, all-star game, FRP return.
DJJ couldn’t get a featured role and was let go.
Picking up Tristan Thompson was worse than adding nobody at the waiver deadline.
Signing Drummond was kind of a waste of time and space, despite being solid value. He could’ve helped us win but ultimately Billy didn’t favor him, and the defense was still a problem.
Terry Taylor and Sanogo blocking 2-way spots for a while, with NO chance of NBA playoff ball.
Jalen Smith was a decent pickup, but he’s also a 3rd stringer here, which is another waste of MLE imo. You can get a starter or 6th man with that exception.
Zach Collins was a fine trade return, but more for his expiring. I wonder what happens next. Clearly Billy didn’t care to play him much in the play-in.
It’s kind of crazy how bad it’s been.
