If I had to guess, they see Kneuppel as someone they can hide defensively, especially if LaMelo commits to playing defense and they surround him with a group of long, athletic players. In that setup, Kneuppel would essentially play the point guard role (outside of primary ball handling), typically matched up with the weakest offensive player. His high motor and IQ could make him a neutral presence on defense, while his shooting and passing add high level decision making and skill on the offensive end.
But man.. imagine VJ playing with Ball, Miller and Bridges.
