But most people here can’t analyze players beyond whether they can shoot or not so they ignore all the other things that make the player really good and impactful. I’m glad our front office isn’t afraid to draft non shooters when the player can clearly play and has high IQ. You just sometimes have to draft good players with good feel for the game. You don’t need to overthink it

I was a big CMB fan predraft but the shooting concerns were valid and the fit question to some extent. However we're a young team, it's not time overthink these things, draft good players and figure it out later. Trades can happen afterwards to fix the fit.

And that’s exactly what people were saying over and over. We are not good enough to be worrying about fit. You draft the BPA and then figure it out later. And the fit concerns were overblown to me. Shooting isn’t the only way a player can fit nicely in a lineup. But yes it is a concern none the less and hopefully he improves it. But CMB always projected to be a good player whether he could shoot or not.

He reminds me of Zion Williamson in that regard. Not even close to being as athletic but the way they are able to control their bodies in air and finish smoothly. It's the reason CMB is such a good finisher at the rim.

yeah efficient in movement is a great way to put it. Nobody is speeding him up in his game, he's running at his pace which is such a good sign.

You sorta see the difference through Mogbo. Mogbo tries to speed up his game offensively, he rushes a lot, and he doesn't have the natural offensive instincts to react to changing situations, which resulted in poor finishing around the rim. CMB does a better job reacting and adopting to how the defense plays him. He finds the gaps in the defense whether it's through a pass or a drive and doesn't panic regardless. That's the difference a 9th pick and a 31st, even if they share a lot of similarities.

That is a thing with CMB, he is always in the right spot at the right time. He is always ready so no need to rush. It is an elite skill that can not be taught.

Looked a bit dicey to start the game, especially with GSW's hot shooting, but man does that defense wear down the other team. It can be demoralizing if you can't even get the ball over half-court or the moment you do it's a turnover.

You can really see some nice chemistry on the team, some of which obviously comes from guys who worked together before summer league but also because most of the guys have contracts already. The other factor is guys who just know how to play ball because CMB, Martin, and Hepburn seem to have no problem fitting in. Nice ball movement, good cuts, etc.

Fun to watch.

Shead and CMB certainly knew how to connect. Their dynamic looked good, although I must admit, I only saw the highlight reel. Was it the same in full, live flow?

I initially thought he was kind of slow. It turns out, no, it's not really a speed thing, it's patience. He knows exactly where he wants to be/go and when he wants to be there, which is pretty rare at his age.

The patience is surprising, because he played on a terrible SC team in a very tough SEC conference. Usually a young player would want to overcompensate and try to be superhuman to make up for the lack of talent around him, but he just lets the game to him.

I agree. It's an extremely advantageous, and encouraging trait.

I call BS on this.

So we were going to add #9 to a 25 year old for a 35 year old who's cap hit is higher, has longer term, and go HIGHER into the tax?

Come on.

And to add, if true...which I don't believe, it's very likely Webster was behind this as Masai was already on the out's.

But again, I call BS.

lol seriously ridiculous that anyone would even believe this.

We can see the utility when he snatches off those rebounds with one hand or when he just takes the ball away from defenders like taking a candy away from a baby. People raved about Carter Bryant's defense abilities but I like CMB more. Bryant is and effort and athletic monster, he's relentless and never quits. CMB is not as athletic but the IQ is just ridiculous, he knows where the play is going, he's ridiculously strong and he can snatch the ball away at any moment with his big hands and long arms. Nevertheless its fun to watch those two compete on D.

I hope we let CMB have similar or more usage next game as well. Maybe use him as a screen hub offensive engine.

I don’t think Shead and Martin are capable of running a good offence. They’re just too much of a non threat offensively to create any advantages.

Pretty disappointed in Shead this SL.

Observations from game last night

- Jakobe shot was flat all night, something looks off
- Chomche should look to dunk the ball anytime within 2-3 ft, needs work on push shot from Jakob. Forcing some passes in the lane, but it's good sign as a willing passer
- CMB amazing finisher, no wonder he averaged .590 fg% in college.
- Shead had 3 nice passes that bigs fumbled.
- Castleton is a net negative player on the floor
- Hepburn too much hands on defense, NBA refs not gonna allow compared to NCAA refs. Gets stuck in the paint after drive, need a floater game
- Key bricked opened 3s, not sure why he got such early minutes
- battle solid on def
- Lawson good player, can handle the ball and score

Understanding that I've primarily been watching highlight videos and not full games, every time I see clips of Shead, they're solid PnRs and transition passing. Is it mostly his scoring threat which concerns you?

He was a second round, if he ultimately becomes a backup pg is still a win. His shooting development looks stalled, it is concerning. His ability to shoot is going to determine his ultimate ceiling.

It’s mainly everything offensively, including his passing. He makes very basic reads which isn’t an issue but it becomes one when you’re basically a non threat at the rim, mid range and 3.

His calling card is his defence but I think even that is style over substance, I don’t think he’s a better defender than Jakobe, Mogbo or CMB. I’m not saying he’s bad at it but I don’t think it’s good enough to paint over his flaws on offence.

I get that he’s a late 2nd rounder and that we shouldn’t complain but the FO has essentially decided he’s our back up PG so I’m going to judge him on that expectation.

Agreed. His shooting will determine if he’s a legit back up PG or just a 3rd string PG.
