Re: Hansen Yang
I'm just really so happy that at the very least this isn't a Ha situation...Yang has some actual skill.
Now Yang versus actual NBA players is a big step for him and that may take a while--who knows how bad or good he'll be in his first season...
But clearly, whomever owns the Blazers in a couple of years may be sitting on a golden ticket if Yang ends up getting significant playing time. If he actually ends up being a good NBA player, it'll be a complete windfall. I can't imagine the amount of endorsement offers he'll be wading through.

this kind of stuff is all over the net and there is never an explanation of just how it is that the Blazers are getting an infusion of cash from China
as far as I know official merchandise sales for jerseys, hats, etc. are licensed by the NBA, not the Blazers. And the revenue is part of the CBI calculation that determines the salary cap. Only 50% of that revenue goes to teams, the other 50% to players, and the Blazers would get 1/30th of that disbursement (after the league office takes a cut)
I'm not saying there won't be avenues for Portland to tap into interest in China and profit from it. I just don't believe the windfall will be as large as people are imagining
maybe Blazer Broadcasting can sign a partnership agreement with China media. That I don't know, but I'd also assume that the current NBA media contracts may have paths that the media partners, and the NBA, can step if front of the Blazers and siphon most of that revenue

The big question I have. How does the NBA collect merchandise revenue from sales inside of China?
Most of Yangs merchandise sales probably will be in China. China is a hot bed of manufacturing unlicense goods. There is little, to no, enforcement against unlicense merch sales inside of China. And I doubt Silver has the balls to push on this issue.

good point...that's probably a significant factor. The NBA licenses manufacturers, distributors, and retailers in the USA; likely in Canada and Europe too. But China? That nation doesn't seem inclined to police patent breakers and technology stealers. I doubt the NBA will be treated differently

There isnt a guy I have ever watched that I would rather have a beer with than Joker. Everyone is different but for my personality type - he is easily the most likable, relatable superstar in my time watching the league.
Just a full stop good dude.

Shouldn't be too hard, its harder to build muscle at that age but when he gets in his 20s that'll be easier

Are they podcasting out of a Tiki bar?
Podcasting has really jumped the shark dude... glad to see real NBA players saying they see the things we see about feel for the game, but if any of these dudes watched more than a 2min highlight reel of Yang, I'd be **** floored. This is some low-energy barely-trying takes by all these ex players who are clearly just there for a check.
Get ready to learn Chinese buddy... #YangBang

right?
how much money can somebody make off a podcast/vlog anyway? I will read about some youtuber making millions but when I start googling the stats on youtube income, for most it's a few hundred dollars a month, and maybe not even that
I get that somebody like Arenas has name recognition but when I notice these NBA podcasts it seems like it's the same former players appearing on each other's pods. Matt Barnes is all over the place

How do I say this politely... Watching and especially sharing garbage like that is why people keep making it.
To each their own, but sharing a video just to complain about it is funny. They don't care if you like it, all they want is engagement and you are giving it to them and now using these forums as a platform for expanding their views.
I really don't get who watches all those YouTube, twitch, whatever content creators these days. Like who watches live streams even, any time I end up linked to something like that it is the most mind numbingly idiotic content, people yelling and acting fools just to get views, but there is so much if it out there. I don't get it. Enough people do that top creators are making millions of dollars. I don't get it. I feel like old man yelling at the clouds status. I really hate where social media and engagement bait is at these days. I just don't understand who consumes that stuff and why it is so prolific.
Sorry that rant got further than I meant. It's fine to share videos here but I find it absurd to share something with the express intent to say how bad it is. It just makes bad content creators more successful and more likely to churn out bad content. *Shrug*

Prior to, and after, the draft there were a few Atlanta Hawks fans thinking that the end of the lottery wasn't too high to draft Hansen.
Outliers? Yeah, maybe.

There were plenty of people who REALLY scout the draft that had Yang as a late first. Shoot, even I included him as one in our draft predictions thread. It’s not really much of an outlier…
However, taking him at 16 IS an outlier. I’m not sure ANYBODY other than the Blazers saw that coming…and Blazer brass probably wanted it that way.
I heard that all of their draft workout film had no shots of Yang. Coincidence? Probably not…

I loved Ha.
But the summer league fan hype is just that. Remember how great Scoot looked against G-League players?
This was just a move to boost Chinese interest in the franchise prior to a sale.
Didn’t scoot only play like the first half of one game? And I don’t remember Ha being good in summer league
Scoot actually played a season in the g-league for the Ignite as he waited to become draft eligible. Dominated there, but again against weaker competition.
I'm not arguing whether or not Ha2 is the "Jokic 2" of the CBA. I'm just shooting my shot that he's not "Jokic 2" of the NBA. And with the team for sale, gaining a Chinese fan base makes sense business wise.
But the team traded down and picked up a future 1st, so I've warmed up to the gamble.Walton1one wrote:Yang hype has reached the stupidity level
Slow as heck, poor stamina, sub rudimentary post moves, poor rebounding, foul prone, has one “go to” slow roll spin move that has already been scouted in SL
Yeah he has good vision\passing, pretty sure that is the not the #1 quality you want in an NBA caliber CENTER.
I can only chuckle at the revisionist history, trying to justify POR picking him at #16
Plus we just picked a center the last draft.
"Did you see what he did against players that can't make it into the league?"
Future Rip City Remix great.
But again, we did trade down and get a future 1st. So, it's mostly just punting this draft.
I mean, when you view it as taking Cedric Coward or taking a flyer on Ha2 and future 1st, it doesn't seem that bad.Sinobas wrote:I like how Yang must be "HA 2.0" just because they are both asian. And their games are nothing alike.
Being Asian has nothing to do with the player comparison. Like Ha1, he lacks the athleticism and shooting needed to play in the modern NBA and has unwarranted hype. I hope that I am wrong. Guy seems awesome. I gain nothing by him failing.
Ha had hype??? I don't recall anyone referring to him as the Chinese Shaq. He was considered a long shot to even make an NBA roster. It's not like they wasted a pick on him. Only 4 players drafted after him ever saw a minute of court time in the NBA. Only one of those, the legendary Pape Sow, played in more games than Ha.
The expectations for Ha were MUCH, MUCH lower than they are for Yang.
