They overpaid when acquiring him because ownership wants to compete for play ins. I would have said hell no to the offers teams like GSW made for him too. A second round pick does them little help.
Vucevic could have netted a first round pick if they had moved him a couple seasons ago. They could have gotten two firsts for Caruso, a first for Lonzo and they completely botched the LaVine trade. Just an example of poor mismanagement and planning
You are overestimating the return, like people did it with Masai trades. It takes someone willing to do those trades.
Only a contender or s stupid GM would've gone for those players. Perhaps the returns were low, it's not like teams were lining up for Vuc, nor Lavine due to salary and injuries. In terms of contenders they don't pay that much. Now stupid GMs could have tried perhaps, but it's not so easy to convince them.
I’m not overestimating the return for these trades, these are all reported. The older a player gets and the closer to them finishing their contract the worse return you get. The exception for this maybe top 10 players but it’s definitely true for Vucevic. Bulls completely botched this to the extent that they might just buy out Vucevic mid season which is such a total mismanagement of assets.
The Bulls have received multiple trade offers over the years for Nikola Vucevic.
