This thread is starting to remind me of the Coaching Search threads back in 2023, where posters wasted way too much time freaking out over unlikely dark horse candidates (Nash/Redick/etc), and there was way less discussion about legit candidates like Darko, even when posters tried to bring them up.
I actually commented on it at the time too lol:

I **** knew it. I **** knew Casey was coming for Masai's job as a clapback from getting fired after winning COTY.
This is realization came to me the first time Casey started attending Raptors home games immediately after stepping down as Piston's HC, and entering an unspecified FO role. He's been coming to Raptors games with his wife since two years ago even when the Pistons were not scheduled to play the Raptors in Toronto.
Edit: I knew I posted something as soon as I saw Casey's 5D Rock Chess dropping. That was the offseason he moved to an FO role and that horrible loss the PG thread is referring to came days after Casey was first welcomed to the ACC in the audience for a Raptors game where the Pistons were not the opponent, which I immediately found strange.
That's some Lawrence Frank type ****.
I edited my post. I found the posts I made back in 2023 as it first happened.
Gross!
This stinks. The only thing casey would be good for is senior basketball advisor and take over for wayne embry Other than that, he has zero qualifications to run an NBA club. If i’m bobby id actually walk the next day if this happens. Peddie reincarnated into Pelley. Ha what a joke.

I am truly **** pissed Casey is even consideration here.
Dude was such an overrated coach that hindered our team...remember?
Choosing to play and rely on Bargnani "come hell or high water" despite Bargs playing horrible. One time Casey blamed JV for Raptors losses and claimed he put Bargnani over JV to close out the game for "rebounding purposes."
He decided Calderon should be the starter ahead of Lowry despite Lowry being **** dominant before having injury issues.
He allowed Rudy Gay to ban stat sheets from the locker room despite Rudy being inefficient as ****.
Allowed Lou Williams to take every end of quarter shot despite how inefficient Lou was at that.
He played Carroll over Powell and Ross routinely despite Powell and Ross being obvious better options.
Refusing to move away from a 2 center line-up, routinely playing Ibaka and JV together.
Masai routinely saved Casey from himself and I was **** ecstatic when we fired him.
And do people **** realize how terrible he was as the Pistons head coach???????
20 wins, 20 wins, 23 wins, 17 wins before being fired.

The problem is we had a real leader in Masai who understood how to run a process and identify someone credible .. it was Darko (who i wanted) & Atkinson in the end vs pelley/rogers who don't know a thing about basketball and are running this process like a joke. To even interview Casey or Marc tells you all you need to know. Zero confidence.

You were definitely more of a Sergio Scariolo guy in the Coaching Search threads. But to your credit you were never really one of the posters freaking out over unlikely dark horse candidates either like Nash and Redick.
Back then I considered guys like Darko/Jordi/Sergio/Atkinson the more legit candidates.
In this scenario I think Bobby has a pretty good chance of getting the promotion here. I think he should be considered the clear favourite at this point in time.

I wanted a euro background and player development guy. Sergio was on my radar along with Darko. But once Darko kept advancing in the rounds, it become clearer he was there guy who was labeled as a player dev. guru. Just knew they would like that.

That definitely isn't true. Your final prediction before the Darko hiring was announced was that it would be Sergio, and that he would edge out Darko because he could win and develop at the same time, whereas with a younger hire like Darko you said there would be early growing pains.

Sure it is - As I said, they were both on my radar as the process went along. Looking back, they ended up taking Darko since he was a player dev. guru - which they liked and they went young.. but as I was calling on both once Darko's name leaked and he was advancing.

The difference is Masai and Bobby, two people qualified for the job, were coordinating the coaching search. Pelley and Ed, two completely unqualified individuals, are coordinating the president search.

Does a President or a GM even primarily do those things? Odds are Bobby (the cap guru) would still be negotiating contracts, and he would be the one making trades (as he has been for years with Masai as the president).
I just honestly don’t know what a Presidents job description really would even be outside of general oversight of the entire operation. I doubt anyone here knows either.
My guess is you don’t even know most of the leagues presidents. They aren’t necessarily hands on in the day to day workings of a team or its team building.
But to be fair, the Pistons have been expecting more success since Casey moved to the FO than it was before.
Bobby won't stay on under Casey.

AA?
Any time a long-time GM gets passed up for the president's job in favour of some unqualified external hire, the GM leaves 99℅ of the time to look for a better opportunity. Most of the FO staff will leave to join Bobby or Masai in their new roles.

You can look at it this way, as soon as Casey gets POBO he will 100% fire every remaining Raptor FO member/helper who aided and watched Casey's dismissal. Bobby, Dan, etc. won't even be afforded the chance to ponder their next move.
Ed & Pelley get to shrug it off as "new guy has the right to staff his own crew and if he happened to have a bone to pick with the incumbent staff that's mere coincidence and remains a professional decision first and foremost" when cleaning the slate was their intention the whole time.
GTFO

He played Calderon over Lowry
To be fair, at the time Lowry wanted Casey to change the entire offense to Rick Adelman's offense that worked well for him in Houston. He would openly pout, walk off the court into the locker room in games when he was flustered, and in hindsight revealed that he had his bags packed counting down to FA. He absolutely deserved to be benched for Calderon at the time, and there isn't a bigger advocate for Lowry on this board than me.
Probably the biggest mark against Casey as a coach is that he allowed Rudy Gay to burn the stat sheets. He seemed to have lost control of the room until Masai made that trade.
As an executive, I have no idea what his influence is on Detroit. The players all do seem to love him. He's not a 'vets only' type of person. He's not a wet noodle like Brad Stevens, who was fired and then bumped upstairs just like Casey was in Detroit. But he's also not someone that I would want spearheading off-season plans or having final say on draft night. The fact that he was fired by the guy he would be replacing makes this a really bizarre situation. Like, the guy he's replacing won a title, so how are you going to legitimately sell the fanbase that you're better in his job?

By all accounts, Casey seems like a nice, likeable guy. The problem is he's 68 and has never shown an acumen for being on the cutting edge of basketball thinking. Nor has he had any experience managing a team beyond a ceremonial advisory role. It's an idiotic hire, but of course the narcissistic nepo baby and his bootlicker underling will want to hire the politically-savvy ass-kisser who has been buttering them up for the last few years. This is how corporate leaders operate. They hire friends and sycophants to fill senior positions, not competent people.

Lol wait, I haven’t been paying much attention to the Raptors and this joke name may be a reality? Would Bobby stick around while Casey is his boss? This doesn’t look good lol.
I guess this is what people wanted.
Makes sense for Ed Rogers - he wants to cut costs, hire someone he can control and doesn’t want to come off as racist.
