The ads are not catering to a market that already existed though. The market that previously existed didn't rely on ads at all, it was mostly illegal, at least in the USA. That market could and would exist with legal gambling companies that were restricted from advertising.
The ads are to draw in new players to grow the sports gambling industry.
Personally I think the nice middle ground should be similar to tobacco. You can buy it but you can't advertise it. If you need a cig you know where to find it, likewise with placing a bet. No need to push it aggressively because, like tobacco, it does have a deleterious effect on individuals and society as a whole. Best option is to honor personal freedom but draw the line at advertisement to not promote industry growth.
