Even if BI remains injury prone the whole time, this deal.would.still rank pretty low on the list of "bad deals" the Raptors have made.
We are talking about a franchise that gave up VC for a bag of peanuts, & lost T-Mac & Bosh for basically nothing.
Is it a bit of a hail mary? Maybe. But sometimes a hail mary is the best option.

I love this rationalization! - Because the Raptors franchise have made some terrible deals in the past, then we should excuse this deal because it's not as terrible as those deals - hilarious! - BI may become a productive and impactful player for the Raptors and I'd still criticize both the deal and contract because I think the team should have done better on both counts because of the circumstances - there wasn't much money available in the FA market and the market for BI was tepid given his injury history and contract ask. If the Raptors for example were to sign Gradey Dick to a max contract presently and he then became an "all NBA player", I'd still criticize the contract because they should be able to sign Dick for much less even if he then went out and provided good value for the max contract.

Giving up Rasho (who was a solid C) & the 17th overall pick was a much worse deal than this one. That was a hail mary to appease Bosh. Signing Hakeem was a hail mary to appease VC. Turkeyglue signing was a bit of a hail mary. Marion trade was a bit of a hail mary. Kawhi trade was a huge hail mary.......that worked out well. This is the type of franchise that needs to make those trades from time to time.
We are talking about a franchise that gave up VC for a bag of peanuts, & lost T-Mac & Bosh for basically nothing. Those situations caused massive setbacks for the franchise.
Is it a bit of a hail mary? Maybe. But sometimes a hail mary is the best option. This is a hail mary with very little consequence.
If BI doesn't work out, at least it kept things interesting, gave the fans some hope & had people talking about the team again.
Nothing lost in my mind.

Only thing you can really complain about is that we would have been better off waiting till FA before re-signing him if that was a possibility. We likely save at least 5-10m in AAV given how the FA market has played out. But, there's also a decent probability that this wasn't even an option and that Rich Paul was not letting BI come here without an extension in place that met what he wanted. At the time, it was a reasonable deal though and not giving him 4 years reduced some risk.

Here's the thing though. I don't think its a bad deal no matter what happens. I do this deal 10/10 times.
There are some that are acting like the sky is falling, which is laughable.
Its not a deal worthy of a high level of criticism. Its very low risk.

Imagine a team that needs a #1 scoring option terribly. Imagine said team getting said #1 option for a couple spare parts and a late pick. Its absolutely the worst! Fireable offense. Any idiot on RGM would have gotten Shai for that package and on top of that would make him give up half his salary.
