Naz Reid has shown positive strides, but still needs to improve his ability to play as a center
According to Cleaning the Glass, Reid spent 55 percent of his time playing center and the other 45 percent of his time playing power forward last season. However, he posted a +13.9 efficiency difference as a power forward and a +3.4 efficiency difference as a center. Reid's +3.4 efficiency difference as a center was a career high, indicating that improving as a traditional center is possible.
Nevertheless, the Wolves posted a 116.3 defensive rating with Reid as the center compared to a 103 defensive rating with him at power forward. Additionally, Reid had an 11.8 net rating when he shared the court with Gobert compared to a 2.4 net rating when he was on the court with Julius Randle. It's clear that playing next to Gobert covers up some of Naz's defensive shortcomings.
However, finding ways to maximize the Reid-Randle minutes will be key; this will likely be paired with defensive improvements from Naz. If Reid is unable to make these improvements, the Wolves may look to use Randle in more of a center role.
Reid held opponents to 59.1 percent shooting at the rim. This number isn't elite, but it's certainly respectable and a positive sign. Regardless, Reid has moments where he struggles to stay engaged off-ball. Plus, his lack of lateral quickness hurts him when he's switched onto smaller players. These are two key areas of growth for Naz.
Ultimately, Reid will never be an elite anchor like Gobert. However, the Wolves need to maximize their defense when Gobert is off the court, which involves improvement from Reid on defense. As Beringer develops in his rookie year, Reid's defense and ability to play more of a traditional center role will be vital. For the Timberwolves to reach their championship aspirations, Reid will have to make some strides on defense. These improvements might be subtle, but they will be crucial.
I cant stop thinking about Joan-Naz pairing...
