I read this as they want to go into the season with four RBs. They've lost Taylor and Kiner in the past two weeks, as well as Abdullah before that (though he was a bubble player). James is still out, and Guerendo is constantly injured. So the Robinson move makes some sense.
Didn't read the article, but I saw a Dieter Kurtenbach headline about how the Niners are making panic trades because of their poor roster construction. I can't agree with that given the nature of the trades we've seen. If they were trading for DL, CBs, TEs, sure. But they're trading for WRs and RBs, two positions that looked pretty good going into the season.
RB should have been a position of strength, but literally every player at the position except McCaffrey has dealt with injury. James and Kiner had no track record of injury, nor Taylor to my knowledge. Guerendo has a huge injury history, so not cutting any slack there, but that should have been a deep position based on roster moves.
WR was always going to be a bit dicey to start the season because of Aiyuk's injury and Robinson's likely suspension. But again, that's a position that has been decimated by injury. Jennings is hard to read given the circumstances, but if he truly has a recurring calf injury, it would make sense to be careful with him. Cowing hasn't been able to stay on the field despite holding the record for consecutive college games with a catch I think. Pearsall has struggled to stay healthy despite never missing a college game. Watkins went down. Gage went down. That's not a roster construction thing, though perhaps the blame falls elsewhere within the FO given the absurd numbers of injuries.
